About this property

With accommodation on one level, this end-cottage is the immaculate conversion of the old cart sheds and enjoys views over open farmland to the rear. It boasts a pretty, sheltered aspect to the front, and overlooks the courtyard. stone-built with a red pantile roof, the brick arches are a main feature, giving the living areas a lovely spacious feel and a pleasant outlook.

Closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle and its owners is the pretty Teesdale village of Staindrop in the York Dales. The Castle, a monument that is open to the public, is one of the grandest in England. Extended and modified over the centuries, the heart of the castle is medieval with a walled garden and 200-acre deer park. Staindrop itself is home to many interesting shops, pubs and cafes, all set round its long village green. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is only five miles away, and is the setting for the Bowes Museum, in addition to its wide range of shops and tea-rooms. The area is a wonderful place for walkers and cyclists with numerous routes throughout the stunning scenery.

We phoned the owner to enquire whether the problems had been rectified. But he got quite angry with us and said that the place was more trouble than it was worth and if "you don't want to you needn't bloody well come,". In light of his rudeness we didn't bother going and booked another cottage. He refused to recompense us in any way. Rather than stay in a dirty cottage we decided not to go. Sykes were as helpful as they could be but as the booking agent any refund was dependent on the owner.

We ate out every day as the cookware was unhygienic (the non-slip coating was flaking off the pans) and the cooking utensils had green mould on them. The family in the other cottages experienced the same issue. The dishwasher was full when we arrived too. The majority of the leaflets were out of date and it was difficult to look things up as the wifi was very spotty and weak. There wasn't a visitors book to give us any information on the area, places to go, the best pubs etc. The sounds from the farm are often quite alarming even though we knew it was a working farm. There were lots of flies, presumably because of the cattle. The shower door broke while we were there and was repaired the same day but in a very haphazard manner, the owner wasn't very helpful, when we asked if he had a fan we could borrow he said we were in the coldest cottage so shouldn't need one, despite the 25 degrees plus weather. It was lots of silly things that could easily and cheaply have been rectified, the pillows and cushions for example were not worth using so we went out and bought our own after the first nights sleep. It could have been really lovely but they don't seem to care anymore and it feels like they are obviously ready to get out of the holiday letting business.
