About this property

This characterful, end-terrace stone cottage is situated in the peaceful and attractive village of Sedgwick, surrounded by countryside and near to the historic town of Kendal. The cottage was formally a worker’s home, for those who were employed at the village’s manor house, and it still retains many period features, such as wooden panelling on the cosy sitting room walls and original latch doors. Upstairs are two comfortable bedrooms, a double and a twin, with pleasant views to the village beyond. There’s also a family bathroom on the first floor, ideal for a long soak in the evening. Downstairs you’ll find a well-equipped kitchen for preparing those all-important picnics, as well as a cosy sitting room with a dining area and a warming gas fire. You can also sit outside for a morning coffee at the front of the property, or dine alfresco after your day of exploration. The location of this attractive cottage enables walking from the door and the Lancaster Canal towpath is just yards away next to the now empty section of the canal. Sedgwick also has the benefit of a good playing field which is cared for by the village as a whole, which will delight both young and old members of your party. Close by is the majestic Sizergh Castle, with its fantastic interior, small lake and beautiful gardens, set in rolling parkland and well worth a visit, as is the nearby Levens Hall, known for its world-class topiary. Kendal is a short drive away, and is often hosting festivals such as Lakes Alive, as well as a weekly market with artisan food stalls. This town is also surrounded by hills, so why not climb to Kendal Castle’s ruins and take in the views of the Lakeland Fells? The fabulous and quintessential Lake District town of Windermere is half an hour away, where you can explore the bustling centre with its many cafes and pubs, or enjoy a boat trip to Newby Bridge or Ambleside. No matter where you decide to discover, return at the end of your day’s activities to the peace and tranquillity of Wilson’s Cottage, the perfect touring base for a family adventure.

An historic Lakeland town with a fine reputation for shopping, Kendal sits on the banks of the River Kent and is known as the Southern Gateway to the Lakes. Its old cobbled lanes and byways branch off the attractive main street, and the stone ruins of 12th Century Kendal Castle sit perched on a hill with views over the town. The Abbot Hall Art Gallery's regular collection exhibits portraits by Kendal born George Romney and works by Turner and Ruskin, with other exhibitions through its links with the Tate. Both Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall with its superb Topiary Garden are nearby, as are limestone escarpments for easy walking, offering thrilling views of the Lakeland Mountains, the Howgills and Morecambe Bay. Kendal itself is ideally placed for exploring South Lakeland, the Yorkshire Dales and beyond. With other attractions such as Kendal Museum and the Museum of Lakeland Life, Lake Windermere and the wider National Park within easy reach, Kendal provides a superb base for a relaxing break.

With the central heating and gas fired imitation log burner, the property soon warms up on a cold night. The shower is a little lacking on water pressure, but wont stop you from getting washed, but it does have a full size bath in addition to the shower. Beds are comfortable and there's enough storage in the bedrooms for plenty of clothes. The property does not list WIFI in the advert, but on the paperwork in the cottage, it gives details to a none existent router, so sadly there is not internet access provided, and the location has very poor mobile connection, so be prepared for this if you do need access to the internet. There are plenty of walking options from the property, and a nice farm store and pub/restaurant within a short walk. Supermarkets or main shopping can be done in Kendal which is a short drive away. Overall, our stay was delightful, and I would be happy to stay here again.

Within easy reach of all the various places of interest. Sadly the internet was not working which made it more difficult to book certain things in advance. Also no can opener. The head of the shower did keep dropping down towards the wall. Plenty of space in lounge and bedrooms. Kitchen a little small. Lots of literature about local attractions. Games and reading books also in the cupboards. Towels supplied. We had a fabulous week and very much enjoyed returning to our cottage.

Would benefit from having dividing wall to main room reduced in height, or removed. Very old cooker. Old fridge. No separate freezer. We were only 2 people. I can’t imagine how 4 would manage. Other rooms were quite reasonable considering age of property. Bathroom floor has a major slope right to left. Difficult to keep balance. Bath needs replacing and shower virtually ineffective. There is a very effective heating system with radiators which we used to dry the washing as there is virtually no outside space to dry and no clothes horse inside. The cottage was nicely positioned in the village. Good walks nearby for dogs. However, the village itself is difficult to access. I am not a professional driver so found it problematic reaching it from main road. Preferred to use a back road into Kendal for access.
