Situated at the foot of the Howgill Fells in the upper Eden Valley is the old market town of Kirkby Stephen. Set between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks this traditional market town hosts a variety of shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs, catering for every taste and budget. With a thriving local community and many traditional old dwellings, Kirkby Stephen boasts a large number of cobbled old yards, quaint corners and a pretty picnic area called "Frank's Bridge", whilst just a mile from the town is the old railway station on the Settle to Carlisle Railway line. Visitors can enjoy many excellent walks and cycle routes nearby or explore the magnificent Howgill Fells and the majestic Pendragon Castle.
