Site Description

Calthwaite Hall is part of our exclusive Bouja Luxury Breaks Collection. Uniquely set on the footprint of the barns used for a historic dairy farm and accompanying country house and gardens, this truly magical setting mixes historic country living with contemporary sophistication. Calthwaite maintains the traditions of a Cumbrian village with a local pub/restaurant serving traditional fare, real ales and roaring log burner alongside the old style estate sandstone village with church, primary school and worker cottages. The historic, gothic hall is at the centre of the village yet cleverly maintains the feeling of a hidden hideaway with formal lawned grounds and ornamental ponds designed by William Sawrey Gilpin, historic listed features such as the Portuguese Sweet Chestnut Specimen tree, hidden folly and veteran trees where cuckoos can be heard. No wonder the Howard family (of Castle Howard fame) previously used this as a country residence.

Lodge was nice however there was a few things wrong that could be rectified. Our electricity went one day and found it quite difficult to actually get hold of anyone. The surroundings could do with a tidy up and the decking needs a clean !

Comfortable, spotlessly clean lodge. Forgot to take washing up liquid and was given some by housekeeping who went out of their way to help. Dexter fab situated lodge for lovely sunny days chilling on decking

This was the most expensive stop on our staycation (by some way, nearly £1k for 4 nights) and unfortunately as value for money goes, it really didn’t have any. The lodge was nice enough, but the location isn’t great (in the middle of nowhere really), WiFi appears to be drained from the other buildings so is very poor, constant noises all day/night from the boiler and extremely cold at night. There were no basic cleaning products available which given the current situation is slightly worrying, luckily we had brought our own. Although we understand the need for extra cleaning, the check in time of 5pm and check out time of 9am seems very steep, it almost takes a day of your holiday away, with no impact on the price. Given this was our honeymoon, we do feel it was a bit of a let down unfortunately.
