About this property

Smugglers Cottage offers an escape to an enchanting countryside oasis yet is close to the exclusive waterside town of Looe, the charming fishing port of Polperro and delightful Whitsand Bay. With shared use of a 40ft outdoor heated swimming pool for supervised children, (seasonal opening), garden pond and water fountain, and a private south facing patio, it is an idyllic rural retreat. This converted stone former farm building is beautifully furnished in a nautical theme and has rustic charm throughout balanced by the comforts of modern living; high quality mattresses, plump sofas and full central heating.

The owners Georgian country house is set away from Smugglers Cottage which inhabits a private corner with enclosed patio and barbecue. With accommodation all on the ground level, there is an open plan living room (kitchen/diner/sitting room), one double bedroom and one bunk bedroom and a shower room with WC. Also available to book individually, or for larger groups, are Cider Cottage, Daisy Lodge and Sam's Cabin.

Elsewhere within the grounds is the shared use of a large meadow that overlooks the scenic countryside and woodlands suitable for ball games as well as children’s swing and picnic tables. Fowey, 13 miles away, is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and holds special interest for visitors of all ages whilst the vibrant naval city of Plymouth is just 21 miles. The beaches of Seaton and Downderry are nearby too. Suitable for couples or a family of four, Smugglers Cottage is a peaceful retreat to visit at any time of the year.

Looe is Cornwall’s second largest fishing port and hence there is always a lively maritime bustle around the quay area of East Looe, which is connected to the quieter West Looe by a seven arched 19th century bridge over the River Looe. You can also catch the river taxi between East and West Looe. East Looe has narrow cobbled streets, twisting alleyways and plenty of tourist shops, whilst West Looe has a lovely outlook across the harbour. Looe’s viewpoint, Banjo Pier, can be reached from the quay and is a great spot to watch the returning fishing trawlers and look across the bay to Looe Island, which can be walked to occasionally at very low tides. The sandy Looe beach adjoins the pier and is very popular with families because of its safe shallow swimming and vast expanse of sand. There is also a great rock pool area at Hannafore that children will love. West Looe has a discovery centre, and the delightful Kilminorth Woods have way marked walks through the majestic oak wood, rich in plant, insect and bird life. Apart from beachy activities in this part of south east Cornwall, there are many mining remains on Bodmin Moor and in the Tamar Valley, and much of the mining landscape has World Heritage status. This area of Cornwall has inspired writers, such as Daphne du Maurier and much of Bodmin Moor has inspired legends linked with King Arthur. There is much to explore in this beautiful part of Cornwall.

Also the kitchen was poorly stocked ( missing utensils such as an egg cup and cheese grater.) The host however was very accommodating and welcoming.

The cottage itself was just right for what we needed, and was in a great location to explore Cornwall. We loved the pool, nice and warm and with plenty of seating around it for the family to relax. Communication from the owners was great - they are friendly and on hand if you need them. Would definitely visit again!

Cottage was comfortable, but was looking a little tired and cooker needed updating. Use of the field was great and views were amazing, but picnic tables badly needed replacing. 5:30 arrival time is much too late.
