"We loved the Onan for the peace and tranquillity which is exactly what we needed. However, we did not like having to holiday with the spiders and cobwebs, having said that we found the Onan to be satisfactory."
"Excellent location, nicely set out and equipped. Lovely owners!"
"The place smelt incredibly damp and was very dusty, the curtains were hanging by about only a few hooks and looked tatty. The cottage has so much potential as the ground work is done and kitchen well equipped, just let down by tatty furniture and the smell of dust and damp, couldn’t unpack clothes as they would have absorbed the damp smell, came away smelling of the cottage. Owners were nowhere to be seen in arrival and hadn’t managed to contact them before arriving as their answer machine was full, had previously left a message as had cottages.com but no response from owners. On arrival we were shown to cottage by a lady who rented a place next door. Disappointing but we made the most of the area and stayed out as much as possible."
"I am afraid that I cannot give a glowing review here as things did not start out well and went downhill from then. The first issue was getting in contact with the owner. We telephoned when we got there, but there was no answer and her mailbox was full so we could not even leave a message. We then encountered dog muck (from her dogs we presume) by the steps to the property. We were expecting these steps, but not the fact that the hedge had overgrown them, making it difficult to get down them (they are not that even in the first place). The keys were in the door, so that was OK, but we felt, from the first that the place was damp and musty. It was not long before we realised that this was a big issue, but hoped that heating the place up a bit (it was not a good August day) would help. This was not to be easy the first night, as the central heating was not working, and had not been for sometime by the looks of it, the pressure in the system being Nil (a sign that it had not been working for sometime). We did light the fire in the woodburner, and that save the day heat wise, but did nothing for the smell of damp and must. To be fair the owner did tell me that the cottage (a converted barn) did get damp, but that is more reason to keep the heating on all the time.... The cottage was well equipped though, just a shame that we could not enjoy it all as we had to stay out of the place because of the smell. My wife was effected the worst, waking up sick every morning because of the smell. The smell and dampness also meant that we could not enertain our grand children at the place (they were going to spend a night with us), it simply not being right to bring them into that sort of environment. The place was clean, but we did think we saw a while coating of mould 'spores' on the vertical surfaces of the kitchen cabinets. In the end we left a day early giving them an excuse about having to get home. It would be a lovely place to stay if they got rid of the damp, cleaned the dog muck up and laid out the 'welcome pack' with all the details of the cottage instead of leaving it buried in the book case. They would also do well to look at the comments in the visitors book. The first entries where they left a cream tea for their guests on the first night being something that they have stopped doing (it was well received when they did it), and then there were comments about making the bathroom better (by the way this smelt of paint once the heating was on, another reason to think the heating had been off for some time, the paint on the radiators not having really been heated much before). Sorry to have to be so negative overall, but it did not just leave up to the required standards."
"Lovely holiday cottage in a peaceful setting with friendly, helpful hosts. Quite isolated but easy to get to. Being able to explore the owners extensive grounds and play tennis on their court was a nice touch. Cottage was clean (apart from under furniture) and tidy. It was extremely well equipped - home from home. Great shower and bath, very comfortable bed with nice bedding. Good heating for the colder damp evenings. Brilliant place for dog owners to stay but for non dog owners you wouldn't know dogs stayed there. Only disappointment was the owners dog poo right next to the car parking slot - not noticed until it was stood in as we were departing. I am sure if we had mentioned it the owners would have cleared it up immediately."
"The musty smell in the cottage was a real turn-off. It was a pity that we couldn't enjoy the charming outdoor view due to small windows (at the wrong sides of the house)."
"We had a lovely time at Onan and our hosts were very helpful, especially with the WiFi. The Cottage is very remote, we were fine with that, it's what we were looking for and very much part of its charm. So you need to arrive with everything you need for a couple of days food wise. I would also recommend taking your own sharp knives if you are planning on doing any serious self catering. There was only 1 supplied and that wasn't the sharpest. I can understand why they weren't provided, no doubt they are the type of thing that often leaves the property. It's within easy reach of The Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan, the Smugglers Museum at Jamaica Inn and some wonderful moorland scenery. We're thinking of going back."
"We had a great time and would love to stay again!"
