    About this property

Once a workers cottage, this riverside property offers guests a perfect base from which to explore this beautiful area.

Accessed by a bridleway, this remote, attractive workers cottage, dating back to 1710, is nestled between the bank of the tidal New Bedford River, open farmland and Oxlode Lakes fishing pits. The river marks the eastern edge of the rspb Ouse Washes, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a bird watchers paradise, noted for an array of rare wildfowl and birds, and the spectacular Whooper and Bewick’s swan migration between November and February each year, that sees upto 100,000 birds arrive in the area. There is also an abundance of wildlife to see almost daily from the cottage garden, including muntjac deer, hares, badgers, green parrots, barn owls and marsh harriers. With the ever changing landscape, this property is a great place to stay all year round. Fen Cottage boasts stunning far reaching views of nearby Ely cathedral, and as well as overlooking the rspb reserve, is only 6 miles from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust’s, Welney Reserve. Its location on a bridleway offers superb dog walking and cycle routes. The cathedral city of Ely, university city of Cambridge, historic market town of Downham Market, and the market town of Newmarket, with its famous racecourse and connections to horse racing, are all within easy reach. With the Norfolk coast only an hour away too, you will never be stuck for something to do. Day/weekly tickets for fishing at the lakes next to the property are charged at around £6 per rod. The local village of Little Downham, 3 miles away, offers a shop, two pubs one of which is acclaimed for its Thai food, and a fish and chip shop. A great rural retreat. Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

"We stayed twice this autumn and enjoyed the quiet location and easy access to Ely. Beautiful views surround the pretty cottage. Freshly laid eggs for breakfast were a nice touch, as well as the welcome hamper with Prosecco. The cottage itself is charming, well equipped with everything one might need. The area has plenty to offer - from walks, golf and horse riding to museums, street markets and wetlands. The hosts were lovely and efficient but not intrusive. We will be back."

"This is a charming, comfortable, dear little cottage. It is lovingly maintained and thought out, with all sorts of considerate touches - fresh eggs from the host’s own hens, a spoiling bottle ofprosecco, really nice bed linen and loads of towels, pretty roses to welcome you and best ofall - lots of comfortable pillows, so you can get really cosy. Great view of Ely cathedral, birdsto watch and even binoculars to see them with."

"The house is located directly on the dike of the New Bedford Canal. It's very quiet. From the terrace you have a beautiful view over the fields to the cathedral of Ely. The garden is beautifully laid out. The cottage is very well equipped and very clean. The bedrooms on the upper floor are accessed by a fairly steep staircase, which may not be easily accessible to people with reduced mobility. The access road leads along an unpaved dirt road for the last 500 metres. We felt - just like our dog - very comfortable in this cottage. Ely is about 7 miles away. Here you find everything you need, superstores, small shops, nice tearooms and a fascinating cathedral."

"Beautiful cottage. Smaller than it looked from the photos. If we had had 4 people staying it would have been crowded, but it was nice to be able to have our daughter stay for one of the nights. The two bedrooms open off each other so privacy could be a problem if couples don't know each other quite well, and the stairs up to the bedrooms are very steep. Would be very difficult indeed for someone with any mobility issues to get up them, and almost impossible to get down. Otherwise absolutely lovely. Nicely decorated, very clean with good quality linen and towels. Welcome pack a very nice idea, and basics like washing up liquid, toilet rolls, soap and hand wash available. Garden beautiful; classic cottage garden in full bloom. Nice walks from door of cottage. Owners next door friendly and helpful, but not intrusive."

"Lovely cottage in a very quiet and tranquil location. Great for getting away from it all and relaxing amongst nature. Lots of lovely walks and wildlife to experience."

"We loved our stay at Fen Cottage from the minute we arrived! It was very well equipped for the 2 of us and our husky dog's favourite spot was by the log fire! The cottage is well-placed for visits to Ely and Cambridge, both beautiful places to walk around. Thank you!"
