About this property

The Thatched Cottage is a traditional-style Irish cottage set on the outskirts of the sleepy hamlet of Drummin, 10 miles from Westport in County Mayo. Dating back over 200 years the cottage has a number of quirky features, which add to its charm and appeal, including uneven and sloping floors, low-height door frames and a traditional Irish fireplace complete with woodburner. The property provides compact, simple but comfortable accommodation with an open plan living area, cosy family bedroom and additional smaller bedroom. Outside, the lawned garden with seating offers views of the nearby mountains, while excellent walking and hiking are available from the door. Nearby Westport is an official access point for the award-winning off road cycling and walking trail, Great Western Greenway. This traffic-free route runs between Westport and Achill Island along the route of the old railway line, and enjoys some magnificent scenery including along the Clew Bay coastline. The Thatched Cottage provides lovely character accommodation in a pleasant rural area, and is a perfect base for the Great Western Greenway.

Winding leafy lanes, honeysuckle and wild roses in season, hilly areas and incredible views characterise the rural village of Drummin 10 miles south of Westport in County Mayo. Take a walk to the top of the hills to enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views across Clew Bay to Clare Island, once the stronghold of Gráinne Uaile, the Pirate Queen. There are many fascinating and beautiful places to visit in this part of Ireland. Go fishing in the rivers such as the Erriff River around eight miles away, and the Delphi River in the Doolough Valley, about six miles away. The lively town of Westport nearby is proud of its rich Irish heritage and offers an excellent selection of shops, restaurants, pubs and traditional music. If you love the outdoors, head for nearby Croagh Patrick and its bracing hikes and spectacular views. County Galway is just over 30 minute's drive away to the south, and offers a wonderful day out, with glorious coastal scenery and the world-famous Connemara National Park.

Trying to cram in more beds, and an extra bedroom, has resulted in an impossibly narrow passage which means sliding in sideways to access the bathroom. Hard to imagine how 5 people (bed capacity) would fare in the rest of the cottage which was fine for 1-2 but in winter would be cramped for more. No doubt a lovely place in spring and summer but in winter the cottage was seriously cold, pre-set storage heaters and woodburning stove took the edge off but no more. Owners could not have predicted or helped power cuts, loss of wifi and phone signal due to storms, but it would be good to provide torch and candles in case of such eventualities (as other properties do as a matter of course). And given lack of phone signal, either to know where owners lived to be able to contact them and/or for them to check that all was ok and keep whoever is in the cottage updated (only the owner can report loss of power and other services).

Stayed with family and we loved it. Very warm and cosy with the stove and plenty of turf and logs provided. Our bed was comfy and although there's not a huge amount of space it was perfect for 5 people and our doggie with 2 sharing doubles and a single. Walking distance to Breslin's pub which looked closed but was open so you should check that out for a nice Guinness. Also perfect for looking at the stars and managed to capture the milky way on my camera it was so dark outside. Westport is a great town to eat and drink and shop. You should also do the nearby Sheffrey Pass scenic route drive as the photos from the top are amazing and there's a picnic table if you want to eat lunch up there.
