Plaka is a quiet hillside hamlet overlooking the Bay of Souda and the White Mountains, connected to the village of Kalives via a 4 km long footpath.

Only 1 km away is Almirida, a once quiet fishing village, which has in recent years developed into a popular seaside resort offering a plethora of tourist facilities suitable for all ages. There are two fully equipped child-safe sandy beaches, perfect for some relaxed sunbathing and exciting watersports alike.

A stunning wooded countryside with several hiking paths lies right behind the town, being a haven for walking lovers especially in spring time, when the temperature is still pleasantly mild.

Chania (23 km) is the second largest city of Crete, located in the north-west corner of the island. Incredibly charming due to its medieval architecture and lovely Venetian quarter with a number of narrow streets leading to the lively port. Its historical past is reflected in the majestic Venetian lighthouse, the Firka Fortress (which nowadays hosts an interesting maritime museum) and the Turkish mosque.

The town also swarms with excellent restaurants serving the most delicious Cretan dishes, bustling bars and clubs, not to mention shopping opportunities at the famous Agora market.

Other recommended excursions include the villages of Vamos, Gavalochori and Kefala.
