About this property

When you relax on your terrace gazing out to the sea you will soon realise why Corsica is known as ‘‘L'Île de Beauté’. Located In the southern part of the Bay of Ajaccio, Villa Le Maquis is the perfect home from which to explore this enchanting island.

This contemporary wooden house is sure to impress with its modern interiors and smart design. The open-plan living space is magnificent as you slide back the floor to ceiling doors and stare out to sea. Step straight out on to the decked upper terrace where it’s all about the mesmerising views, whether you are relaxing in the whirlpool or enjoying al-fresco meals with the scent of the maquis around you.

Wander down the stone steps to the impressive swimming pool where you bathe in the glorious sun before swimming as you catch a glimpse of the Mediterranean. It’s only a short drive to reach the sea with beautiful beaches such as Portigliolo and Cupabia nearby and many more remote spots accessible by boat or foot. Indeed, this region is a hiker’s delight with amazing walks for all abilities through the sweet scented maquis and eucalyptus forests with idyllic views of the sea and mountains.

Head north to Ajaccio, the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, to experience the charm of the region’s capital or follow the winding roads south to timeless villages such as Olmeto and Sartène. Take a boat trip from Propriano, where you may even spot a dolphin or discover the prehistoric site of Filitosa, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

At the end of the day, return to your elegant abode where you can enjoy amazing sunsets with good wine and company in this incredibly beautiful part of the stunning island of Corsica.

On the Coti Chiavari peninsular, in the southern end of the Bay of Ajaccio, Villa Le Maquis is located in 3000m2 of wild maquis (Corsican herbs) with only the view of the sea, land and surrounding houses in front of you. The peninsular is dotted with homes and hamlets and there’s a handful of restaurants within a short drive. There are also stunning fish restaurants right on the beach in this area, often only accessible by foot, boat or 4x4 where you are rewarded by amazing fresh food in idyllic settings.

There is a mini-market within a few minutes by car or you can head up to the seaside resort of Porticcio (24km) for a greater choice of shops and larger supermarkets.

Just 3.5km south you will find the beautiful and remote beach Cala d’Orzu (it is possible to access it by 4x4 but only via a steep dirt track, so many arrive by boat!) where there’s a restaurant and fine sands with clear waters. Plage de Cupabia (17km) is easier to approach by car and has lovely gently shelving waters whilst to the north the lovely Portigliolo beach (9km) has a great year round watersports instructor plus equipment and boat hire. The idyllic Mare e Sole beach (14km), perfectly sheltered from the wind, is also ideal for paddling and swimming in the clear blue waters. In fact, all along this scenic coastline you will find wonderful white sandy beaches, some only accessible by boat or foot.

This region is very popular with hikers, there are some wonderful walks to suit all abilities both along the coast and inland. Head to the stunning Capu di Mura peninsula with its 16th century watchtower and the forest of eucalyptus trees in Coti-Chiavari where you have amazing views of the sea as you walk or cycle. There are also some spectacular routes around the prehistoric site of Filitosa (24km), a unesco World Heritage site.

Drive north to visit the island’s capital, Ajaccio (42km) in just over an hour and visit the city’s art galleries, markets, fantastic restaurants and hang out in the wide-open squares facing the sea. This is of course the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte and you can visit his childhood home. If you are feeling really adventurous you can take the charming train from Ajaccio to Corte for the day, passing incredible scenery as it winds through the forests and mountains, a spectacular and relaxing way to see the interior of this amazing island.

Alternatively, following the winding roads south to discover some beautiful villages such as Olmeto (33km) with its timeless charm and mountain scenery or Sartène (48km), a picturesque and unspoilt town steeped in tradition with a fascinating history, wonderful wines and more spectacular valley views.
