About this property

This magnificent, detached cottage is located in Bowness-on-Solway near Wigton and Carlisle, on the edge of the Solway Coast. With mesmerising, uninterrupted views stretching across the bay to the Solway Firth and Scotland beyond, this cottage makes an ideal base for families and couples exploring this charming corner of Cumbria. Set solely on the ground floor, the cottage has two cosy bedrooms, a luxury bathroom with a double-ended bath, and a superb shower room. There is an open plan living area, beautifully furnished and equipped ensuring your stay will be perfect. The dramatic scenery is brought inside with large, feature French windows opening out on to a beautiful decking area, so no matter what the weather you will always be able to admire the scenery. From the cottage, steps enjoy direct access down to the shore where in season you may observe the unique and traditional style of fishing in the Solway Firth called Haaf Netters. The Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail starts in the village and stretches right across the country to the east coast, and whilst guests may wish to walk the 73 miles to Wallsend, having a superb pub serving delicious fare at the very start may delay your departure! A wonderful way to explore the Solway Coast, an Area of Outstanding National Beauty and World Heritage Site, is by bicycle and although the Hadrian’s Cycleway also runs through the village, there are also numerous other circular routes on hand. Wildlife lovers can embrace the local nature reserves with both Dumbrugh Moss and the South Solway Mosses close by, and positioned right on the edge of the estuary at this Bowness-on-Solway cottage, you are already in a renowned World Ramsar site for marine birds. Being close to the border of Scotland, Carlisle, known as the border city, is well worth a visit, or how about a day at the races? Cross the border just into Scotland and visit Gretna Green, just over 20 miles away. Whatever your reason to visit this fascinating area and this fabulous cottage, you will undoubtedly wish you had found this idyllic location years ago and will look forward to enjoying the superb accommodation again and again!

With a charter granted in 1262, the traditional Cumbrian market town of Wigton still holds a market each Tuesday in the covered market hall. This lovely town is a popular centre for shopping, pubs and restaurants, as well as for other activities such as theatre, bowls, swimming, tennis and other sports. The Lord Melvyn Bragg novel, 'A Time to Dance', featured the town of Thurston, which was based on Wigton and the local area. A lovely base for a holiday exploring Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.

We have been twice this year when I got really home sick. This visit was to give me time to rest and recuperate after the sudden death of my son. It was truly healing. If you love wildlife and nature and watching the tide come and go no matter what the weather then this is the place for you. Ideal for exploring the north west Cumbrian coast and round the corner the Dumfries and Galloway coastal area. Amazing wildlife reserves close by and handy for a bit of city life in the lovely city of Carlisle where you must visit the cathedral and its lovely cafe and Bookends ....the best bookshop in the area. Tullie House is amazing too but Google first as I believe it is due to close for some work to be done. Easy to travel to beautiful Cockermouth....birthplace of William Wordsworth and me!!!! Lovely independent shops too. If the weather is good travel over via beautiful Caldbeck with lovely craft shops. The owners might live next door but do not intrude but are lovely and helpful. I LOVE their garden and envy the wooden summerhouse in the garden that I covet as an artist studio. There are lots of beautiful villages nearby to explore and lots of creative people live in the area. September is Artists Trail time. Just leave me the odd week when Solway Cottage is available

    - Unfortunately we did not meet Patsy and Bill during our stay as they were away so we didn't get chance to let them know that Maia Cottage was wonderful and that what they provide is exactly right ... don't change a thing! Thanks for a lovely, relaxing stay.
