"Allan house is a lovely property. Nice and spacious with an enormous back garden laid to lawn which was much appreciated by the dog. The weather was not very kind to us - saw the night sky only once, but it would be lovely sat in the garden in the warmer season. Loved the Kielder castle visitors centre which is a short walk away and from there just minutes to the lakeside walk and a nice evening stroll as a final nights exercise for the dog. You are also able to walk up to the observatory in the Kielder forrest without getting the car out. The Keilder forrest and lake are man made and quite definitely designed with children and cyclists, in particular, in mind. This means the paths round the lake and to specific points are very good, mainly cinder tracks so flat and suitable for even wheelchairs. There are many routes off into the forrest but really designed for mountain biking. My grandsons would have adored it. Toilet facilities are good at the three main centres but we found none of the other facilities open apart from the cafe at Kielder Castle. There is a brilliant hide at the North shore walk (Kielder Castle end) and also at Kielder Castle end a lovely 1 mile walk past the Squirrel feeding station. We walked miles over the week but did not see a red squirrel and only 1 deer. Perhaps the wrong time of the year and poor weather conditions. Beware this is a very remote location and you need to either take everything with you or as we noticed many did use the Tesco delivery service. Very thoughtful of the owners to leave bread and a large container of milk and some wine!We drove into Hawick on a very rainy day some 24 miles away over the Scottish border. The only vehicle we saw on the way there were timber lorries heading into the forrest to collect loads - yes this is very much a working forrest. There are nice shops and supermarkets there. The other trip we did which was 1 hours drive away but well worth it was National Trust Homestead and Hadrian's Wall. Very atmospheric and stunning views. At the opposite end of the lake is a really nice little village called Falstone. Park at the Dam and walk down to it. It is very expensive parking in the Kielder Forrest. Ok if you are based somewhere else and just coming for the day it is not too bad. If we had gone walking from the various car parks over the week we would have had to spend £35 in parking fees - bit much given we spent the previous week near Whitby in Yorkshire and found wherever we went parking was free from 31st October to 1st March and yes there were free toilet facilities in the car parks. If you want to come to the forrest for a weeks walking or cycling on the wild side, Allan House is the place to choose because lots of facilities are this end of the lake and you can do a lot without having to pay car park fees. The locals are very friendly and will give you advice on where to go."

"Fantastic cottage in a brilliant location. Exactly what we wanted, great walks from the front door. Owners were really friendly, will definitely stay here again."

"Lovely cottage, very clean and well equipped. The cottage has been nicely decorated and furnished. The owners and neighbours are lovely. The area is beautiful lots of walks and moutain bike trails. Nice local pub, very nice cafe at Kielder Castle but the local shop is not really a shop at all more a post office with a few other things for sale. You can't even buy the basics like bread ans milk, it really lets the area down. But we would definitely stay at Allan house again"

"The stay at Allan house in kielder was lovely, really comfortable stay. The local shop is very poor, so had to drive to Bellingham to get some supplies. The rest of the time, we ate at the anglers arms, kielder castle, leaplish or Tower Knowe. Everywhere was lovely, and everyone so kind and polite."

"We've just returned from a wonderful 2 week stay, this is a place to truely relax. We ventured out to the Northumberland coast, and Hadrian's wall, but mainly stayed put and enjoyed the forest walks that are accessible straight from the front door. The castle cafe is wonderful, lovely home cooked food and lovely staff and dog friendly. The local pub is a little disappointing food was nice and staff friendly enough, but decor is just a bit run down. Unfortunately for the local community the small shop is closing down and running stocks down, so don't rely on this being there much longer. Tesco do deliver to this area, and the visitor centre at Waterside (about half way down the resevoir) sells basic provisions. A visit to the observatory is highly recommended, we didn't realise how popular this was and that people book months in advance, we were lucky to get 2 cancelled tickets on the clearest night of our stay, but if this is one of the reasons for booking here ( it's literally 5 mins drive) then look to book your spaces in advance to avoid disappointment."

"We had a lovely weekend here. Lovely clean and well equipped house with a lovely garden. Great location for walking and mountain biking."

"Allan house was a perfect base for our holiday. Gordon and Yvonne were most hospitable and had prepared the house to a high standard so everything was prepared for our arrival and we were very happy throughout our stay. The local amenities are limited, small shop, pub (the anglers) and the cafe at the castle - there is also a large bike shop and mountain bike activity seems to be popular though we didn't on this occasion we noted the large range of routes. We had two dogs with us and the forestry trails were perfect for our needs and the dark skies at night were full of stars. So if country living and simplicity are for you this is the ideal location. It is not an 'easy' place to reach the roads up from the A69 (turn off near Hexham to Belingham and up alongside Kielder Water etc.) are a bit better condition wise than the roads from the North down (off the A7) but which you use also depends where you are coming from. We would thoroughly recommend Allan house, certainly for a couple, as we were, but also for a family as the second bedroom has full size beds and plenty of space. Rear garden is a very good size and enclosed and leads out into a small area of forest above the stream."
