    About this property

Blackdown Hills an aonb, between Honiton and Chard, offer great walks and with Lyme Regis, Sidmouth, and Exeter all easily accessible.
In a glorious setting in the Blackdown Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and between Honiton and Chard, lie The Barns around a cobbled yard. Both detached holiday barn conversions are decorated and furnished to a good standard andhave their own gardens and fabulous views across the countryside. Situated in the grounds of the owner’s Grade II listed, medieval farmhouse, they are in an excellent location from which to explore numerous National Trust houses, great walks and the cathedral city of Exeter. Also within easy driving distance is the famous World Heritage Coast, as well as the seaside resorts of Lyme Regis, Sidmouth, Beer, Branscombe and Exmouth. Situated between both Dartmoor and Exmoor National parks, both with brilliant walks, heather clad tors, ponies, rugged terrain and quaint villages. Within six miles there are local family run shops and Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen. Shops 21/2 miles and pub 1½ miles.

    "Beautiful cottage in beautiful surroundings."

"Both being in our 80's we found the cobbles at the entrance difficult and would of licked a seat outside the kitchen door."

"A very peaceful, away from it all, holiday"

"Me and my wife have stayed at the shippon many times and love it every time. Best place we've stayed by a mile if you want a quiet relaxed weekend.☆☆☆☆☆"

"Warm welcome clean, comfortable with fabulous views of the surrounding countryside, offering peace and tranquility. Lovely."

"Stock up because you are in middle of nowhere (which is what i wanted) driveway not as bad as described on other reviews (drive slow) . Plenty of places to visit within an hour or so drive. Perfect for a couple who want to get away. My fiancee and i loved it!!!!"

"A delightful and well presented cottage set in beautiful grounds. Excellent WiFi coverage. A wardrobe in the bedroom would make this perfect, the cupboard in the bathroom was adequate but the provision of a wardrobe would make this truly first class. Final access to the cottage is a bit rough but having a huge barn to park the car is a bonus."

"The Shippon is literally in the middle of nowhere. If you want peace and relative solitude then this is the place for you. Even our TomTom couldn't locate it within half a mile. We loved it there. Just make sure you take provisions though as NONE of the surrounding villages have a shop and pubs are a rarity. Nearest shops are Honiton or Chard, both over 6 miles away in opposite directions. Stuart and Jane live close by and were extremely nice and helpful. Seaton, Beer, Branscombe and Sidmouth were all roughly 30 minutes away. Exeter Cathedral was further but worth a visit. We also recommend Forde Abbey and Seaton Tramway."

"Spacious accommodation for two, with beauty inside and out. Tranquil rural location, with a real sense of history. Narrow Devon lanes a bit scary at first for city dwellers, but not many cars about. Just a short drive to many interesting places."

"All in all, the holiday and accommodation were excellent. The two disappointments were a) the translucency of the blind in the bedroom - the direction of the sun in the morning made sleeping after sunrise somewhat difficult. This we pointed out to the owner, who assured us that it was in hand. The other b) was more of a surprise, the absence of a welcome pack upon arrival. Fortunately we travel well prepared, but for some who may not be so prepared, the nearest shop is some way away. We didn't mention this to avoid embarrassing the owner. We would, however, return."

"A very tranquil location but the track down to the cottage is very rough my vehicle is close to the ground and invariably scraped the loose cobbles. A 4X4 would have coped better! The cottage itself was very comfortable and well equipped but needs a blackout roller blind in the bedroom, the sun easily penetrated the existing one and shone directly in our faces when in bed."

"This is a lovely cottage amid rolling green hills and farmland so provides a great retreat. We wanted the quiet location and were happy to drive everywhere but if you want pubs or shops on the doorstep then you may find this cottage a little too remote. It's a large place for 2 people so plenty of room and the layout works really well. We have a 5 month old baby and she could sleep at the other end of the lounge without us disturbing her. The kitchen was really well equipped which isn't always the case with rental cottages and the general standard of decor, fixtures and fittings was excellent. The place was always warm with heated floors and thick curtains so the log fire was left unused despite it being very cold outside. Our only complaint was the wifi which has a really poor signal and there's unsurprisingly no 4G either. Once connected, it's very fast but the signal kept dropping out as it comes from the main house and has some very thick walls to penetrate. The hot water in the kitchen was also just a dribble and took 5 mins to run hot. We would still return though as the remote location is lovely and most attractions are around 30-40 mins away by car. If it weren't for our baby, we'd also have taken advantage of the lovely walks that start from the cottage so perfect for a walking based holiday."
