Known locally as Muchty, the village of Auchtermuchty can be traced back to Roman times, with the distinctive name translated from Scottish Gaelic as the somewhat less romantic ‘upland of the pigs’. Gaining royal burgh status in the 16th century and developed commercially through engineering, linen and whisky. Used as the backdrop for the television series ‘Dr Finlay’s Casebook’, the village still boasts the Tannochbrae Tearoom. A statue in the village commemorates Sir Jimmy Shand, accordion player and bandleader and The Proclaimers also hail from the village. Auchtermuchty has local shops, pubs, chemist and a post office.
