About this property

In a tranquil corner of Western burgundy, surrounded by hills and woodland, is the charming and authentic Pavillon de Chasse, a holiday home full of character and warmth. Whether you are wanting to discover the region’s wines, explore local villages and market towns or relax in this quiet and rural setting, this is a great location near some of Burgundy’s most fascinating attractions.

Pavillon de Chasse offers ample space with seven bedrooms across both the main house and two further guesthouses in the grounds. Throughout you can feel the old-world atmosphere of this rustic home with many characterful features such as wood beamed ceilings and original flooring. The bright, open living space is inviting and leads to a particularly well equipped kitchen and stairs lead to pretty bedrooms on either side of the house, one on a mezzanine level above its own sitting room.

Outside the swimming pool is the perfect place to cool down after a day out exploring or fire-up the poolside barbecue to dine al-fresco with family and friends. There are beautiful views of the countryside from the vast and private gardens where you are surrounded by lush lawns and shady trees.

Within 5km you can be in the charming village of Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, famous for its pottery with many workshops still thriving. You’ll find a lovely patisserie and a couple of restaurants here or head to one of the other local towns such as Saint-Fargeau with its magnificent castle or Toucy with its picturesque weekly market on a Saturday morning.

Exploring further afield will take you to charming villages and market towns such as Sancerre with its fine wines, Briare on the banks of the Loire or a little further to the famous hilltop town of Vézelay. The spectacular cities of Auxerre, Nevers and Orléans can be visited within a day or you may prefer to spend your time exploring magical castles, discovering idyllic vineyards or taking a boat trip down the Loire or Yonne rivers.

With hikes, mountain biking and horse-riding nearby, as well as other family activities such as tree-top adventures and farms, there is so much to do in this part of Burgundy before you return to your picture-perfect and charming house.

Pavillon de Chasse is set in a hilly, rural and wooded area of the Nievre department in western Burgundy, 5km from the village of Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye. You are also near the borders of the Cher, Yonne and Loiret departments, each one with charming villages and market towns, fascinating art and history and fine wines to sample. This part of Burgundy offers undulating landscapes of woodlands, vineyards and small lakes as well as the Loire and Yonne rivers only a short drive away.

Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye is a delightful little village famous for its pottery with a museum dedicated to this art form and plenty of workshops still thrive to this day. There are a couple of restaurants, a lovely patisserie and a supermarket.

Just north of the château is the town of Saint-Fargeau (16km) with its remarkable castle open from Spring to Autumn, sometimes featuring special events such as amazing re-enactments. There’s also a lovely farm nearby, Ferme du Château (15km), open at the weekends, where visitors can get hands on with the animals, a brilliant place for families. Kids will also love the Parc Naturel de Boutissaint (7km) where you can see many animals in their natural surroundings. Another local attraction is Guedelon (7km) where you can watch a 13th century castle being built using only authentic tools and locally sourced materials, taking many years, as well as other interesting events taking place on site.

There’s a great range of activities in the local area with beautiful hikes, canoeing on nearby lakes or rivers, horse-riding and tennis locally and some brilliant opportunities for cycling and mountain biking. Lac du Bourdon (10km) offers fishing, canoeing and wonderful walks along its shore or nearby woodlands. Tree-top adventurers should head to Nature Adventure (6km) with all sorts of activities on offer including paintballing.

Heading across to the Loiret department, explore close to home in the stunning gardens of Château de la Bussiere (46km) or the attractive town of Gien (50km) on the Loire River with its weekly market. Briare (38km), also a market town, is where the Loire River crosses with the Canal de Briare with lovely riverside walks, boat and canal trips and wonderful flower filled streets in the late spring and summer.  You can also take a day trip to the home of Joan of Arc, Orléans (114km), with its stunning medieval centre and cathedral.

Wine-lovers will appreciate being an hour away from Sancerre (39km), a picturesque village with more than 300 vineyards or wine caves in the surrounding area where you can often sample and buy the white wines of this region. If wine isn’t your thing, the local goat’s cheese is also held in high esteem!

Back in Yonne, the famous and charming hilltop town of Vézelay (62km), on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, has been loved by Christians, writers, artists, historians and lovers of Romanesque architecture. Visiting the 12th century Basilica is a must and afterwards stroll through the beautifully preserved streets full of colourful flowers in the summer months.
