Featured in The Times ’10 Best Villas in Spain’ 2019

Perched on the Andalucian hillside, just outside of Gaucin, this stunning villa offers spectacular views over the surrounding countryside, inviting you to relax on one of several charming terraces and take in the beautiful setting.

Surrounded by 26 acres of forest, Villa Bougainvillea enjoys a secluded position with a wonderful garden filled with herbs and fruit trees that create an idyllic natural environment. Arranged over several floors, the Moorish-style property has plenty of charm, with a whitewashed facade and characterful arched windows that frame views out to the garden and landscape beyond.

On the ground floor, the central living rooms are bright and airy, with terracotta tiled floors and exposed timber beams stretching across the tall ceilings. Beside the fireplace, an informal seating area offers a comfortable place to sit, whilst, in the neighbouring room, a large kitchen with a wonderful island counter has plenty of space for preparing meals whilst enjoying views out to the mountains in the distance. A delightful internal courtyard sits in the villa's centre, with potted plants and vibrant tiling creating a charming setting to al fresco throughout the day, and various seating is positioned beneath the shaded archways, where you can escape the heat and relax with a book. There is a barbecue for entertaining guests, or head up to the roof terrace and share a bottle of wine whilst admiring the spectacular views.

The villa features three bedrooms, two of which offer a double bed and neatly decorated ensuites. The third bedroom can be found on the lower ground floor, where a double bed and additional sofa bed are perfect for families or additional guests.

With several terraces and balconies, there is plenty of opportunity to spread out and make the most of the warm, sunny days. On the lower level, a stunning infinity pool is perfect for cooling off, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim or laze in the water whilst soaking up the panoramic views. An assortment of loungers and umbrellas are well-positioned on the lawn nearby, inviting you to recline in the sun whilst soaking up the peaceful setting.

Villa Bougainvillea really is the height of luxury and sophistication, especially for those who appreciate absolute peace and quiet, tranquillity and for experiencing traditional, rural Spain at it's best.

Situated on the hillside in the midst of the beautiful Andalusian countryside, Villa Bougainvillea enjoys a peaceful setting with a number of trails nearby to explore the wonderful landscape. A short drive away, the charming village of Gaucin is a typical rural settlement, with winding streets and traditional whitewashed houses adorned with colourful pots and flowers. Spend the morning exploring the medieval layout and stop by the ancient ruins at the Castillo del Aguila to enjoy a panoramic view over the surrounding area. Despite its size, Gaucin has a number of notable restaurants where you can sample some of the region's delicious cuisine. La Fructosa is a locally-owned affair, whilst Michelin-star Platero & Co boasts a wonderful terrace and weekly changing menu offering up wonderful seasonal plates inspired by fresh produce from the mountains nearby.

Whilst charming in itself, Gaucin sits on the western side of the magnificent Serranía de Ronda and is also regarded as the gateway to the national park. Filled with a wonderful array of flora and fauna, the vast natural area has plenty of well-marked trails that are easily accessible and invite you to explore the diverse landscape. Opt for a more challenging hike and follow a route up to one of the mountain summits, or head just 45 minutes to the north to visit the town of Ronda. An important cultural centre during Islamic rule, the historic settlement is divided by a dramatic gorge, which you can admire from the Puente Nueve that towers a staggering 120m above the canyon floor. Take a walk through the cobbled streets to discover the religious architecture and visit the elegantly decorated Iglesia de Santa María La Mayor before heading to the town square, where you can sit with a drink and soak up the laid-back atmosphere.

Los Alcornocales national park sits just a short drive to the west, with a succession of rugged mountains and sloping hills that play host to the largest mass of cork oak on the Iberian Peninsula. The area is popular with hikers and bird watchers, or for a more adventurous day out, you can choose from a selection of outdoor activities such as mountaineering or horseback riding.

Alternatively, for those looking to enjoy Andalucia's wonderful coastline, the beach is less than an hour's drive away, making it easy to spend the day beside the sea. La Chullera is the closest beach, whilst slightly to the north, the popular San Pedro Playa offers a long stretch of golden sand. There are various options for water sports, as well as a handful of chiringuitos where you can escape the heat and enjoy a lunchtime snack or ice cream.

This was a wonderful stay! The property is in a spectacular location, beautifully maintained and equipped, and overall provides an unforgettable experience. The house manager Linda was an excellent communicator and most welcoming and helpful. We cannot recommend Villa Bougainvillea highly enough and would happily return any time.

We had the most amazing 3 weeks at Villa Bougainvillea and are still missing those spectacular views 10 days later. Linda was exceptionally helpful from the point of booking through to the completion of our holiday. The house is beautiful and extremely well equipped. Beds very comfortable, including the sofa bed. There is not a poor bedroom which is unusual. All very comfortable with great showers in each. We didn’t spend much time indoors as the outdoor areas are fabulous. Various terraces and always possible to find shade somewhere. We had a cross-section of ages from 5 months to 78 years and everyone loved the house, garden, pool and views. We have stayed at around 15 houses in the Gaucin area over the years. Most have been lovely but needed a bit of TLC. Poorly equipped, fridges not cold enough etc. Villa Bougainvillea is completely up to speed and everything works. There is even an ice machine in the freezer. The big question: Would we return? A huge YES. We booked for next year before leaving. This will be the first time we have ever returned to a rental property. Villa Bougainvillea really is a very special place.

We have just returned home after a fabulous holiday at Villa Bougainvillea! The luxury villa was very spacious and well equipped with everything we needed. When we did decide to leave the amazing pool and it's incredible views we didn't have to venture out too far to find something to do. Ronda is a beautiful town and we would highly recommend a visit. Also the town of Gaucin is just a 10 min drive from the villa with fabulous restaurants - though I would recommend booking in advance. Also in Gaucin is a wonderful deli called Bonissim that again we'd highly recommend.
