    About this property

The exceptional 15th century Chateau Gombardy is located in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine national park and has been beautifully restored to its former glory. The local area is known as the “Garden of France” and is famed for its fine wines and immaculately groomed vineyards, charming villages and romantic chateaux. The ancient cities of Nantes, Saumur and Orleans are nearby and the River Loire itself is a short walk from this holiday chateau.
The Chateau Gombardy is perfect for reunions, corporate hospitality, holidays and is particularly suitable as a French wedding venue on account of the chapel situated within the grounds. All buildings on the estate have been fully restored to their original glory and feature modern bathrooms and central heating throughout.
The Chateau is available throughout the year and sleeps a total of 19 guests. The swimming pool lies adjacent to the south facing Orangery and there is also a brand new hard court tennis facility on site.
Guests will have access to all the public rooms on the ground floor and the 5 large en-suite bedrooms on the first floor (able to sleep up to 10 people). Besides, a small hall with exclusive access leads up the circular stairs to the large en-suite tower room with four poster king sized beds. On the top floor there are 3 bedrooms with separate bathroom (able to sleep up to 8 people).

A coach house is also located within the grounds of this French holiday Chateau which can be booked in conjunction with the chateau to sleep a further 7 guests. The Coach House is NEVER rented to an independent group.
This is an exceptional property which is ideal for a wedding or celebrating a special occasion with friends and family.

    Accommodation

    Chateau Interior (max. 18 guests)
The ground floor is elegant, yet intimate with 12' ceilings and long windows. Most walls are covered with stretched silk tissue tondu, large period mirrors over marble stone fireplaces and oil paintings adorn the walls. Most rooms have an appropriate chandelier. There is full central heating throughout, tapestries adorn the flagstone hallway and main staircase and a crystal chandelier hangs from the 32' ceiling. The well-lit salon to the left of the hall has comfortable seating in front of a working fireplace. On either side of the fireplace are two doors artfully concealed in the walnut wood panelling that leads to two rooms, one to the library/games room that has French doors opening on to the terrace and garden. The other opens to a warm television room, with a long shaped sofa on which to watch satellite TV. To provide additional accommodation, there is also the option of adding a queen bed to the TV room and move the sofa bed in the bureau.

Adjacent is a sunny and comfortable fully equipped study that has a single sofa bed and adjacent to the study is a small hall off of which there is a separate WC and a separate white tiled bathroom and shower. This suite of rooms is suitable for a guest who prefers not to take the stairs to an upstairs bedroom. To the right of the entry hall is an elegant dining room with long mahogany table and upholstered chairs to seat 16. An enormous gilded mirror hangs above an exquisitely carved fireplace mantle of blue Belgian marble. In summer the French doors can be opened to bring in fresh breezes from the courtyard. While the dining room is the perfect venue for a dinner party, the directly adjacent Breakfast Room with its south and west facing windows is the bright and informal place for meals. With glass doors opening to a pretty terrace, and a huge stone fireplace, the aged-pine farm table can seat up to 14.

The kitchen is next to the Breakfast room and is large enough to give cookery classes. The 4'x8' granite slab, which can be used as a work space or breakfast table, dominates the centre of the room. For barbecuing there is an open fireplace with a rotating spit, and next to it a professional-level La Cornue stove with five gas burners, a griddle and two ovens, one of which is electric. Furthermore there is a washing machine and dryer to supplement the laundry room near the Orangery. Just off the kitchen is a WC. There is a wall mounted TV for the chef to stay abreast of the world news.

The first floor is approached either via the grand staircase from the entry hall or by a sturdy wood circular staircase with wide steps and a railing. On a landing halfway up the main staircase is an attractive guest WC. There are 5 ensuite bedrooms and each is equally luxurious with their own decorative scheme, all covered with gold silk tissue tondu, and designed for occupancy by a couple. Each room is exceptionally spacious, with high ceilings, a fireplace with a marble mantle, thick wall to wall carpeting, and lovely views of the garden or courtyard. Each bedroom is handsomely furnished with substantial pieces that include an armoire (unless there is an adjacent dressing room) chest of drawers and a seating area. All have their own en-suite bath with tub or marble stall shower, and WC. Each of the 5 bedrooms is very private, has a king-size bed and 2 of them have a small balcony overlooking the rose garden.

The second floor can be reached by a circular stairway that leads from the hall on the ground floor or from the first floor. There are 3 further bedrooms on the upper floor. The fifth bedroom sometimes referred to as the "honeymoon suite" is situated in the tower between the first floor and the top floor. It has a canopied super king-sized (6'8"square) four poster bed with a large fireplace. There are steps up to an en-suite bathroom that has a shower with a separate WC and bidet. This double aspect room enjoys far reaching views of the countryside over the tops of the trees. With deep wall to wall carpeting this room is an oasis of calm. At the end of the antique tiled passage is a very large high ceilinged room that has a multiplicity of uses. At one end there is a fully equipped kitchen that is suitable for preparation of a family meal or for a mother's help to prepare an evening supper for young children. This room is carpeted throughout, and has a large sofa, armchairs and coffee table as well as satellite TV and VCR player.

Recreational facilities at the Chateau include snooker, darts, table soccer and a selection of board games. There is a stereo/CD player and a telephone for calling throughout the property. The beams of the vaulted ceiling are said to have once been the ribs of a sailing ship; this is a remarkable piece of craftsmanship. The chateau has super fast Wi-Fi throughout, including the swimming pool area.

The orangery and pool are fantastic additions to the Chateau estate. The south facing orangery receives light all day long; the 1,000 square foot structure has high ceilings, limestone floors and exposed stone walls that lie along one side of the flagstone deck surrounding the 23' x 49' pool. There are 4 arched glass doors that open onto the pool deck, allowing guests to enjoy meals there. There are many lounge chairs, a hammock and large parasols for relaxing around the pool.

The concept underlying the orangery, consistent with the theme of luxurious comfort at the chateau, is to provide every amenity one might need to spend an entire day poolside without having to return to the chateau. Amenities include a shower and WC, an exercise machine, table tennis, and a kitchen with granite counters and a two burner stove, microwave oven, dishwasher and refrigerator. For barbecuing there are two large gas grills that can be wheeled onto the pool deck. Adjacent to the orangery there is a large laundry room with two heavy duty American washing machine and two separate tumbler dryers. Also in the laundry room is a large two door refrigerator with indoor icemaker, and an additional refrigerator for cool drinks. Ironing facilities are available in the laundry room. The orangery is multi-purpose, for example a wedding or conference could use it for cocktails or for meetings, even a dance floor at a celebratory event. You can also enjoy the brand new hard court tennis facility on site.

The Chapel has been fully restored and is located on the site of a XIth century chapel that was dedicated to St. Mark. This Chapel, an impeccably renovated little jewel of Gothic architecture with a vaulted wood ceiling and tofu stone walls, all skilfully illuminated by concealed lights installed at the top of the walls, is situated some 40 metres from the Chateau. About 50/70 people can be seated on rows of wooden pews and chairs facing the altar. On the other hand the chapel has a solemn character, a place where one may retreat for a moment of quiet reflection, the acoustics are truly remarkable for a building of this size, and it is possible to imagine you are in a huge lofty cathedral.

The gardens are a real bonus of this chateau experience. It is an enclosed and totally private estate of sweeping lawns, fruit orchards, stands of chestnut, poplar, linden and pine trees, flower gardens and lawns dappled with shade from century old trees; a feature that makes the Chateau especially appealing is its extraordinary rose garden. The elaborate arrangement of arches, benches, shallow canals and fountains covers a huge area with more than 6,000 roses between the pool and the tall hedge that borders the front of the property. It is particularly suitable for larger social functions. The garden can be illuminated at night.

The lake has a 25 ft. fountain that provides a focal point amongst the weeping willows. The fountains and lampposts, reminiscent of 19th century Paris, add to the old world ambiance. The fountain, in a flower garden that surrounds a gracious terrace where guests may dine outdoors, creates the sound of softly running water in the courtyard and gardens. The terrace is reached by French doors from the breakfast room. A very special feature is the opportunity to grab a chair, a book or something similar, and go and sit in the shade under a tree or out in the sun and enjoy total tranquillity.

"I stayed at the Chateau Gombardy for a week last summer (2018). There are not enough superlatives to describe this enchanted place. I have so many favorite spots. An afternoon walk through the rose garden filled me with joy. A quiet moment in the chapel soothed my soul. Champagne in the grand salon before dinner was so civilized and relaxing. Of course, for more excitement, there were tennis matches and pool time. And that’s without ever leaving the property! There were wonderful things to explore (Chenonceau, for example, is an easy day trip), but it was hard to pull ourselves away from the enchantment of the chateau itself. There are wonderful views from every window. The morning light is beautiful on the front lawn. And a summer evening eating dinner on the patio is magical. The bedrooms are huge and delightful, with wonderful beds and amenities. Staying at the chateau is truly luxurious living on a grand scale. I would recommend the Chateau to anyone looking for a week of fairy tale living."

"This is an absolutely beautiful Chateau. I feel so feel so fortunate to have found it and been able to stay there and share the experience with my friends! Our whole vacation was flawless and every expectation was more than fulfilled. Thierry & Veronique made us feel welcome and cared for us, but were never intrusive. I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty and quality of the furnishings at the Chateau and it was perfect in all aspects. Your gardens are beautiful and I wish that I had been able to see them in full bloom. Next time, we’ll have to visit in early September. I enjoyed cutting the flowers for the dining table and bedrooms! I felt as if I had stepped back in time. It was so relaxing and pleasant, I don’t know how you ever leave! Everything that we asked for was exactly what was provided by the chefs and Veronique for our meals and I couldn’t have enjoyed myself more! Also, thank you for the suggestions of the bed on the first floor. It was wonderful and resulted in only two couples sharing a bathroom! I wish that all of the young ladies in our family weren’t already married, because I would recommend Chateau Gombardy in a heartbeat! Thank you so much for letting us stay in you home! Out of our eight couples, our only regret was that we weren’t staying longer!"

"We recently spent a wonderful week in David's magical chateau. Pictures can not do justice to the reality of the property or the splendid location for day trips all over the region. Rooms were spacious and comfortable, kitchen had everything you could need to make a meal for one or 40 of your closest friends. Dining and breakfast rooms were perfect as was the living room. Fresh apples and pears were ripe and literally falling off the trees, roses were still in bloom, the pool was warm and the tennis court was top quality. Great restaurants and wineries are in abundance and the chef we had come in and prepare a meal for 10 of us was one of the best meals we had in France, including a few of those with Michelin stars. David has some fascinating historic facts related to the chateau which are intriguing. We will return."

"Jerry and I want to thank you and the team for a wonderful weekend at the Chateau.  It was beautifully organised and suited our group perfectly.  The house was spotlessly clean and all the facilities in good working order, including the heated swimming pool, tennis court etc.  The restaurant recommendation was spot on with lovely food and the place all to ourselves, which was just as well as we were a rather noisy bunch! Loved the canoeing/kayaking too and managed to do it whilst the sun was shining and before the downpour.  We also wanted to thank Janet for organising the chef for our Revolutionary evening! The food was delicious, service excellent and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Once again, many thanks for a great weekend.  "

"Just a quick note to let you know that we had a wonderful time at the Chateau Gombardy.  A truly unforgettable experience that none of us wanted to go home. I really wanted to stress the fact that Janet and Thierry both did a fabulous job.  Every single details was covered and nothing was too much for them.  Everything was organised and it was all just perfect. It will definitely be on the list of places to return to."

"Chateau Gombardy was perfect for our wedding and the following week of festivities.  The chapel was an idyllic setting for our ceremony and the marquee looked magnificent for our wedding reception.  Janet was proactive in helping with all the wedding preparation as well as being an extremely valuable asset on the day, whilst Thierry and Veronique were always on hand to assist throughout the week. The swimming pool, tennis court and boules area were great for daytime activities for people of all generations and the two huge dining rooms were ideal for feeding large numbers.  Gombardy really did give us everything we wanted and more for our wedding.  We will certainly be back in the future - we just need to find the excuse to visit again!"

"Staying at Chateau Gombardy was all we hoped for and more. My large family (20 of us including my husband and me, our children, and grandchildren) have a vacation together each summer, and thanks to my daughter Jessica's research, we chose Gombardy for our trip this past June. David Jones, owner, was efficient, professional and pleasant to deal with in setting up the week long rental. Janet Eastman, property concierge and tour hose, worked closely with us via email and phone prior to our visit to up a week's worth of age-appropriate activites and meals. She thought through every detail on our behalf, and provided options and suggestions we could choose from, prompting us to schedule things timely given the season, making all the arrangements and pre-purchasing tickets as needed for our group.  She arranged transportation from Charles de Gaulle Airport for our group that came from different locations at different times to the Chateau and then back to Paris after our visit was over. The chateau was PERFECT for our group.  Each person/ couple had their own room, plenty of space, beautiful grounds, fun at the pool and tennis court, and perhaps best of all, a feeling of freedom and peacefulness.  The Chateau grounds are so pretty, we enjoyed just walking around for pre-dinner strolls. An ample laundry room, the carriage house for our older sons, fresh croissants each morning brought by the groundkeeper and his wife, the housekeeper, were memorable treats.  They took great care of us without being overbearing.  Really sweet people.  A couple of trips to town to the market to stock up on stacks and drinks worked will for our lunches when at the chateau and late night card and board games in the kitchen. I recommend:Working with Janet to plan your trip and be your trip guide for outings. Having the chef come to the Chateau to fix memorable and well planned dinners,Saying 'oui' to fresh baked goods and simple eggs and coffee breakfast each morning Bring your swimsuits and tennis racquets, rent bikes for those who wish to ride around in the beautiful countryside. Visiting the Chateau Amboise and Clos Luce (Leonardo da Vinci), the chocolatier, biscuit maker, wineries etc. etc.  All in all, it was a memorable week that we enjoyed tremendously and would do again to continue exploring the beautiful Loire Valley region.  I felt the people we worked with and who tended us at the Chateau became my friends by the end of the week. For me, the mark of a good vacation is feeling like I actually had a vacation while making sure the needs of my big family are met.  Our week at Chateau Gombardy was exactly that. And last, but not least, for our size group for whom I plan an annual trip somewhere, the cost of the Chateau was about half the cost for hotel rooms in Maui last year."
    Jennifer and James
"Not only did we have an amazing time, all our friends said they really did not want to go home afterwards.  The venue was stunning and worked perfectly, with lots of different areas to use.  Janet was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. Even on the wedding day she ran off to buy us some extra wine.  I would recommend Chateau Detilly to anyone and be very jealous at the same time!"

"Our wedding at Chateau Gombardy was a dream come true, a fairy-tale and immensely romantic. Coming from a large family, with a group of close friends we wanted to find somewhere that would accommodate 20+ people, with also the opportunity for other guests to stay nearby. Chateau Gombardy provided this, and included the bonus of being close to Chinon as well as walking distance from many vineyards. For the both of us, we felt lucky to be surrounded by those we loved, not only for our wedding, but also for the week."
