Holiday Cottages In Northumberland To Rent

Holiday Cottages in Northumberland

Almost knocking on the door of Scotland, Northumberland is England’s northernmost county and is firmly establishing itself as something of a holiday hotspot. Book one of our Northumberland Cottages and you’ll find yourself in a region where the countryside is wild and rugged and the coastline is studded with beautiful, sandy beaches. An historic county, Northumberland is littered with remnants of its impressive past, such as the imposing fortresses at Bamburgh, Walton on Tweed and Alnwick, and the world-famous Lindisfarne Monastery, which you’ll find on the aptly-named Holy Island.

However, there’s much more to Northumberland than history. Wildlife buffs who use one of our Northumberland Cottages as a holiday HQ will find they have good access to the Farne Islands, which is teeming with puffins. There are also some good beaches there, so if all that twitching leaves you drained, you can relax by the sea.

Is Northumberland best for Families or Couples

When it comes to romantic breaks, Northumberland has a gigantic ace up its sleeve - the lack of light pollution gives an unparalleled view of the stars on clear nights, and parts of the county are designated as ‘Dark Sky Reserves’. Sitting outside one of our holiday cottages in Northumberland, with a cheeky glass of your favourite tipple and staring at the stars ticks all the right boxes. However, for couples who like to get out and about, there are some stunning little villages to visit, such as Alnmouth, Beadnell and Low-Newton-By-the-Sea. There’s also Hadrian’s Wall which, while it might not offer Disney-style hearts and flowers, is pretty impressive, and a memorable place for a proposal!

Families who’ve booked one of our holiday cottages in Northumberland will find they’ve got easy access to loads of local attractions. Warkworth Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle and Banna are ruined and crumbly enough to inspire little minds and get a bit of education in under the radar. If your kids need to burn off a bit of excess energy, there are some good, modern things to see and do, such as paying a visit to the Go Ape Centre in Matfen or a cycle along some of the many cycle paths. Alternatively, a visit to The Deep, a world-famous aquarium, makes for an easy way to spend a day out.

"Stayed at the cottage for 4 days early April. The cottage itself is at the end of a long rough track in the middle of farmland; Google Maps frequently said no route found, but just follow the small Tows Bank signs downhill and persevere with it. Street view helped, then add a flag and save the location yourself.Once at the cottage, the location and view is breathtaking; the cottage is perched 3/4 of the way up a deep valley side, with complete views across the valley to the other side, an open vista that goes on for miles and miles. The cottage is actually part of a complex of farm buildings and is sited in the middle of a small holding for sheep & chickens, run by a really friendly farmer, with the freshest possible eggs for £2.50 for a dozen. They are obviously free range, as the chickens roam around the parking area and the yard directly in front of the cottage, and often we had to get the children to herd them out of the way of the cars when we were setting off and returning. Being April, there was an abundance of very small lambs running around in the close by fields, visible through the windows. The driveway at the side of the cottage is narrow, but it was long enough to get two large family estates onto it. Getting out is tricky without beaching the car onto the mud slope, but with just a modicum of scrabbling and dash lights flashing, both cars managed fine.Once inside the cottage, all six of us were very impressed; it has a great cosy but nicely modernised feel to it, and we all relaxed with a coffee and biscuits straight away.Downstairs through the front door there is a porch area for removing boots and coats, hanging up dog leads, drying umbrellas etc. This leads into a hallway which connects the lounge, shower room and kitchen. The lounge is very spacious with comfy seating for seven, a TV, DVD, WiFi box and a solid fuel stove. Feels freshly renovated; still fluff coming out of new carpet. The chimney may need looking at; even with the damper open, a lot of wood and coal smoke kept coming back into the room. The kitchen is easily big enough for the six of us, but if your group is the full seven, there is no seat at the table. The kitchen kit and cupboards has a new feel to it, helped by a modern electric cooker and electric hob plus microwave and fridge freezer. The freezer is only small though. There is also a solid fuel stove, but we didn't use it. Couple of things to note are the extractor fan does not extract outside, so only has a limited effect to remove steam from pans, and there are no cupboards available to put food but plenty of room in the fridge and on the window sills. The shower room downstairs feels brand new; lovely fitted shower cubicle with lashings of hot water, new white ware, heated towel rail. Well finished off too.Upstairs, the layout for sleeping worked fine for us, two adults in a large main double room, two adults in a smaller double room and two children in a room that has bunk beds and a single bed. The children ran some sort of rotation system for who was in top bunk or the single bed. Most rooms are beautifully decorated; only pointer about the bedrooms is that the smaller double is looking a bit tired and could do with redecorating, although from the look of the other bedrooms, this room is the last on the list. There was also a bathroom upstairs, with a shower off the bath taps that clips in higher up the wall. The children were banished from this one, as there is no screen for the shower.Overall, we decided the cottage was 8 out of 10; very cosy, well heated with central heating, spacious enough for two children plus they played in the yard with wellies on quite a bit once the rain had stopped. There is ample stuff to do around and about; as ever, TripAdvisor, Google, whatever your choice will provide things to see and do and places to go.Only a handful of things stop it being a 10; no back garden for the little ones was our main issue; a group of all adults would be fine. The second double bedroom is not up to muster and the chimney/ stove in the front room needs a good coat of looking at. Also, the kitchen was constantly steamy, as the extractor fan doesn't extract steam."

"Very disappointing. The owners seemed not to care. As requested we phoned the owners in the week before our arrival to say that although we were booked from the friday we would not in fact arrive until the saturday. They said that they would be away on saturday at a wedding in Scotland but would make sure that "someone" would be on site to welcome us, show us around, and deal with any issues. Nobody was there. We saw the owners once just before we left at the end of our stay. The hot water ran out after 24 hours. We discovered that the hot-water heater had been turned off. The kitchen was minimally equipped. For example there was no frying pan, and barely sufficient crockery for six. There was a bbq (as advertised) but it lacked a gas tank. The clothes drier seemed not to work and there was no operators manual. Several light sockets lacked a bulb, the tv connection was faulty (I fixed it), the heating was difficult to figure out and control, There was no explanation of how the power remotely controlled gates worked. The resident dogs regularly used the back lawn as a toilet (good job there were no children in our party). The comments in the guest book mentioned many of these same issues, which suggests that the owners should have been aware of these deficiencies but didn't do anything about them. The rent was increased for that week, it being the UK half-term, which made the deficiencies harder to accept. It's a pity. The location is excellent, and the rural ambiance is delightful."

"The cottage was lovely, but I had to go in and Hoover and polish, empty the fire and rinse the bath out! (The bath water was a very yellow colour) their was long dark hair in the master bedroom, none of my family are dark, so wasn't from us! I dont except to pay hundreds for a holiday to then go in and have to clean up on the first day! The bed in the master bedroom was very unfomy! The slats are not attach underneath so fall through constantly, i tryed to put them back on but cut my finger in the process. Their was a broken table in the living room, which was just balancing with a broken leg, lucky my husband noticed as it was sharp, the blankets in the living room absoulty stunk of dogs, I had to wash them all befor my children touched them. The blind that I assume was ment to be up in the kitchen was just rolled up and balancing over the top of the fire place in the kitchen leaving the cord just hanging down, the other blinds just had their cords hanging down aswell (very dangerous when you have children!) Theirs very little cupboard space and the kitchen table was very wobblerly (my husband had to tighten it all up) the track leading down to the cottage is very uneven and bumpy, please go very slowly or you may damage your car. On a plus side the views are beautiful and the farmer and the chickens are very friendly. Lots of nice walks near by."

"This is the best cottage we have stayed in. Inside it is spacious and cosy and very clean and comfortable. The Bedding was immaculate and the location is beautiful. If you like star gazing it is the ideal location for you, as it gets very dark at night and you can see everything in the nights sky. If you have dogs and you like long walks there are plenty of walks for you to enjoy. The only negative point I would mention is the chickens that are literally everywhere. While I love the countryside and seeing chickens that are free to roam around on their own, they were a bit of a nuisance. We spent the whole 2 weeks trying to stop our dog from going for them as they kept coming in the garden. I have not reflected this in the scores as this is not the fault of the owners and it really is a beautiful place. Just be aware that it’s situated on a working farm so if your dog likes to chase livestock or is not impeccably behaved then it could be an issue. Overall though it’s a 10 from us. We are already planning on returning very soon."

"While never meeting the owners or caretaker all arrangements and questions were answered promptly and helpfully via email. The cottage is in a fantastic location. We were left alone in this quiet and pure atmosphere. Only the local farmer was visible (well, lots of chickens, too!!) who became friendly after a bit and really gave us some interesting local history and tips. Modern upgrades made the cottage most comfortable and fully connected (WiFi and TV). Heating and the wood fire were very good and very comforting. The master bed wooden support slats kept falling loose. The kitchen could use some better knives. Local resources for food, fuel and shops are located in Haltwhistle a few miles away. There is exceptional hiking and historical/scenic sights close by. Parking is very limited and a tight fit. The approach drive is steep and I would be concerned about it during winter weather. However, all in all, this was an exceptional location and experience for us. Thank you for sharing your cottage so we could enjoy."
