Holiday Cottages in Northumberland

Almost knocking on the door of Scotland, Northumberland is England’s northernmost county and is firmly establishing itself as something of a holiday hotspot. Book one of our Northumberland Cottages and you’ll find yourself in a region where the countryside is wild and rugged and the coastline is studded with beautiful, sandy beaches. An historic county, Northumberland is littered with remnants of its impressive past, such as the imposing fortresses at Bamburgh, Walton on Tweed and Alnwick, and the world-famous Lindisfarne Monastery, which you’ll find on the aptly-named Holy Island.

However, there’s much more to Northumberland than history. Wildlife buffs who use one of our Northumberland Cottages as a holiday HQ will find they have good access to the Farne Islands, which is teeming with puffins. There are also some good beaches there, so if all that twitching leaves you drained, you can relax by the sea.

Is Northumberland best for Families or Couples

When it comes to romantic breaks, Northumberland has a gigantic ace up its sleeve - the lack of light pollution gives an unparalleled view of the stars on clear nights, and parts of the county are designated as ‘Dark Sky Reserves’. Sitting outside one of our holiday cottages in Northumberland, with a cheeky glass of your favourite tipple and staring at the stars ticks all the right boxes. However, for couples who like to get out and about, there are some stunning little villages to visit, such as Alnmouth, Beadnell and Low-Newton-By-the-Sea. There’s also Hadrian’s Wall which, while it might not offer Disney-style hearts and flowers, is pretty impressive, and a memorable place for a proposal!

Families who’ve booked one of our holiday cottages in Northumberland will find they’ve got easy access to loads of local attractions. Warkworth Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle and Banna are ruined and crumbly enough to inspire little minds and get a bit of education in under the radar. If your kids need to burn off a bit of excess energy, there are some good, modern things to see and do, such as paying a visit to the Go Ape Centre in Matfen or a cycle along some of the many cycle paths. Alternatively, a visit to The Deep, a world-famous aquarium, makes for an easy way to spend a day out.

"Blacksmiths is a lovely cottage decorated and furnished to a high standard. It is comfortable with plenty of room for 4 people although it would sleep 6. The dining area would be more cramped with 6. The kitchen appliances are also of a high standard. However, I would suggest adding some serving dishes, microwaveable cooking dishes and a few more saucepans, especially if catering for 6 people. We had a problem with the heat alarm in the kitchen, which went off about every 15 minutes for no reason on or second evening in the cottage. We had to disable it. I called the emergency number and we had a very quick response. The man who came replaced the battery and asked us to let him know if it didn't resolve the issue. It resolved the problem for two days before it started again. Having rung the cottages office, and electrician came out very quickly and replaced the faulty item. Thank you for dealing with it efficiently. The bathrooms/ensuites are fitted to a high standard as are the bedrooms. The main downside for us was the location. Although the cottage is in a rural, peaceful and central location, it is still a 20 minute plus journey to the main attractions. There are no footpaths from the cottage and no amenities with walking distance. The pub is shown in the information as being under a mile. It is in fact 1.2 miles. This in itself is well within walking distance, but the walk is down a narrow road so particularly pleasant and not suitable for evenings. Having said that, we had a lovely time in S49959 and we would go there again."

"We arrived in the pouring rain and had difficulty finding the key box. Had to phone owner to clarify where it was. A large. piece of shrubbery partly concealed it and I got soaking from the branches getting the key. Had difficulty opening the door into what was termed as a Sun Lounge. The area was scruffy to say the least although it was suitable to use for someone with dogs. Main living area is tired to say the least .. the furniture needs to be thrown out and renewed. A number of wall lights not working from the start. No replacement bulbs available. The bedroom was ok although we found the bed too low and uncomfortable. Right hand blind not staying down.. as for the curtains .... they were a disgrace .. ill fitting and so long they covered the floor better than the windows. We left the property early on Friday as we had had enough. I then found the key box would not open so again I had to phone the owner to confirm where I should leave the keys. Not a particularly great experience.. nothing at all what we had expected considering how much it cost.Very disappointed... Im sure the owner will complain the we should have approached him first,at the time, or beforeleaving this review but some of this should have been addressed before we came so who is actually managing this property?? I could go on... but except to mention the dust and muck under the kitchen units and just one solitary loo roll left for us...I will call it a day .It was an expensive disaster The on-line photographs do not portray this property in its true light."

"Beautiful cottage which is exceptionally well equipped. Very peaceful setting in a very small hamlet of about 12 properties. Nearest shop is 2.5 miles away in Marfen although was closed while we were there. Don’t expect food shops on your doorstep so plan for at least your 1st evening and breakfast. Next nearest was Corbridge which has little Co-op but some lovely little shops too. For major food shopping Hexham is great with big Tesco, plus Aldi and Waitrose. Lots of other lovely shops too. Beautiful countryside all around cottage with amazing walking to be done. Lovely welcome from owners Michelle and Rob with unexpected fresh baked loaf, lovely jam and few other extras. Please be mindful that satnav May try to send you down tracks and dead ends. Mine is only 2 years old and didn’t recognise the dead ends and kept trying to send me down them. Was approx 3.5 mile journey down single track which is undulating with a few passing points. Was lovely but suspect treacherous in winter. We had fun when the farmer didn’t lock the gate properly one time and 4 cows and a bull escaped and led us down the last of the track down to the A road where they kindly stopped the traffic for us! There are other routes once you find your way around but if relying on satnav may be an issue for some. Cottage is by far the nicest we have stayed in by far and would highly recommend and would be happy to return."

"Situated in corner of small rural housing development - found location good and some lovely walks around Rock estate too, stunning night sky on a clear night. There is a pub about 2miles away and a farm cafe the other way, otherwise Alnwick(lovely) is your nearest about 10mins drive which has all the amenities you could want.I liked the location and that is what would make me return. Just a couple miles of A1 and beaches another few miles away.Property was very nice and comfy and warm. Good beds and lovely enclosed garden. If I have negatives has to be some of the kitchen things need replacing ie oven tray etc, I kept my bread in a carrier bag for a week - no bread bin. Also the TV is a wee small for such a large and lofty lounge, think a newer model needed and the old one would go well in the space made for a tv in main bedroom, even has an ariel cable? Wifi is good but not to far away from hub, good speeds so ideal for Netflix...if they had a smart tv."

"S45675 was the perfect location for a family break on the Northumberland coast. The village is small (no shop, only a café which sells bread and a few essentials) but the two local pub/restaurants are fantastic, the views are stunning and it's lovely and peaceful. The house itself is beautiful — light, airy and welcoming with generously sized rooms and plenty of space for relaxing. Beds were comfortable, rooms were spotlessly clean and all the basics were provided — towels, hairdryer, pans and cleaning things — plus a very handy welcome pack with biscuits and coffee. Ideal after a long drive to get here. There's a decent TV, books about the area and lots of board games for any rainy days.We loved our stay and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property. It was a perfect home from home."
