If culture and history are what you’re after, you can visit the city’s imposing cathedral, or the museum and art gallery which has all manner of artefacts from this area's past. The covered market is also worth a visit, not only does it have a great selection of fresh produce, but it has been a staple of life here for over 150 years. Outside the city centre there is a rich choice for day trips; choose from the National Roman Legion Museum, the Newport Wetlands Reserve or even the spectacular Tredegar House.

"This was our second stay at S14259 with our Belgian Shepherd dog (this time for a full week) and we are already hoping to manage a third! This time around both en-suite bathrooms had been upgraded which was a lovely surprise and we really appreciated the changes the owners have made. Being our second visit we were able to settle in straight away rather than try to find our bearings so we managed to tour more of the island during the day and relax in the cottage during the evenings, it is a lovely house with everything you need for your stay - the kitchen is extremely well equipped (I can honestly say it had everything we needed and we did put it to the test) and as the weather was unfortunately a little challenging we spent most nights cooking lovely meals and drinking wine (the hardship!). I managed to walk from the cottage to Osborne house but I’d suggest you just catch a bus from the main road otherwise you’ll look a little bedraggled as I did when you finally arrive, although I must say they do a smashing Victoria sponge in the cafe so that was my reward! I forgot my scarf when I left the cottage but the owner was a true gem and very, very kindly tracked it down for me and posted it back. So for me, it is a 10 out of 10 for the whole package. April 2012. "

"This property was given a "Gold Award" for 2011 and we feel that it is richly deserved again. We have never had such a clean & well equipped property. The en-suite bathroom for the master bedroom and the shower room for the twin bedded room (although unused by us)are lovely. Having to park in a communal car park (parking at the property for loading/unloading is allowed) took a little getting used to but it did make for a lovely, peaceful environment. S14259 is in a good place - at the apex of the "diamond" of the I.O.W. - for visiting other parts of this beautiful and friendly island but be aware that for much of your touring it is necessary to go via Newport which is much busier than we remembered!!! If you have a dog you will find many dog-friendly pubs and the cafe by the car park at Yaverland (Sandown)also is welcoming to them - as well as serving good/keenly priced food. Sept 2012."

"We picked the house because it has five bedrooms and we needed the space. There were very few of this size when we looked. It was not near the beach but the island is small so this was not a problem for us. We would like to thank the owners as they made us feel welcome and left us to it, with no intrusiveness. Our children particularly loved the grounds as the garden was so spacious. They played football in the goal every day and were on the swings most days. The weather was not great but we managed two days at Shanklin Hope beach. Despite the forecast saying 20 degrees only, we all got tanned and swam in the sea. It must have its own weather system as it was much warmer than predicted. One last notable surprise was the council run swimming pool in Freshwater. This was a lovely pool which was nearly empty on the two occasions we went. A very good rainy day activity."

"We enjoyed our stay at S25906, it was lovely and clean and an easy drive from the ferry to fishbourne. It was well equipped and we loved the log burner, big bath and views over the fields from the main bedroom. We felt a few things could have been improved upon, the bed was very firm and felt as though the mattress could with replacing, the garden would have been much better if it offered a more enclosed space for the dogs (the gate is very low and leads onto a quiet road) and no sign of any welcome pack as descried on the website, tea, coffee and milk would have been so helpful seeing as there is no local convenience store, also some logs for the burner would have been great as they were listed on the website and none at the cottage. Avoid the Ming Garden Chinese in Newport - by far the worst takeaway meal I have ever been unlucky enough to part with money for."

"The cottage was in a beautiful location and very quiet. Although it was on the owner's property, it was just inside the drive so we were left completely alone but close enough should we have had any issues. The accommodation was immaculate with good quality bedding (a must for a comfy sleep). Toiletries, tea, coffee and milk were provided for when we first arrived and lots of literature regarding the Isle of Wight to enable us to plan and make the most of our week away. Mrs Turner (owner) was very approachable and friendly and nothing would have been too much trouble if we needed any assistance. All in all this little cottage ticked all our boxes, completely restored our faith in cottage holidays and we would not hesitate in returning. Jan and Simon Newman"
