"S22882 was a good, family-friendly and simple base for our family of six (plus our dog) to explore the north of Scotland. The cottage was clean & tidy upon arrival and everything worked correctly. Whilst some of the decor is a bit dated, we believe this is reflected in the cost. Overall, we felt the cottage represented good value for money. The cottage used to be a stable for the disused mill in the same grounds, which is full of history and very interesting to read about. Also next to this property is a bridge that was built by viking settlers around 1,000 years ago. A stoney beach is a short walk away, just follow the stream behind the property down to the sea.Duncansby Head offers stunning views of the famous sea stacks and plenty of opportunities for birdwatching, as does nearby Dunnet Head. We saw fulmars, kittiwakes, herring gulls, guillemots, razorbills, oystercatchers and shags during our time there. A good number of common seals have made Gills Bay harbour their home, in case you initially struggle to find them (as we did). Puffin Croft (the petting zoo) in JoG is small but excellent, our children loved it.We took the ferry out to Orkney to visit the Italian Chapel, the Standing Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brodgar and Skara Brae, as this was easy to do being so close to the Gills Bay - St Margarets Hope ferry. This was a great day out and we really recommend making the effort to go.Only basic food items are available in John o' Groats itself, but major supermarkets can be found in Thurso and Wick which are not very far away. The owner would have appreciated better communication from us and better accuracy as regards arrival time, so this is worth keeping in mind when you make arrangements for key collection. Our only feedback is to try to address the temperature inside the property. Old wall-mounted electric heaters provide warmth and are effective, but cannot be left on overnight for safety reasons, so the temperature inside the property drops considerably (I should point out the temperature outside was between 0 - 4 degrees throughout our stay). A draught excluder for the front door could be a quick-win.People staying at this cottage during a cold time of year should take extra blankets, be prepared to sleep in their clothes and make full use of the 3 x hot water bottles that are provided. I wouldn't expect this to be an issue during summer months and we would stay again at a warmer time of year."

"Although I can sometimes be a little too critical on reviews it has to be acknowledged that this is the best ever self catering accommodation we have ever stayed in. From its outstanding location perched on the hillside overlooking the bay and hills to the facilities and amenities within the cottage we could not find fault. The property itself is very spacious with good sized rooms throughout and well designed. It has all the equipment and more to ensure an excellent stay and make it the perfect home from home. The little things like the ornaments, artefacts and paintings make for a homely feel whilst relaxing .... nothing better than looking out over the bay from the patio doors with a glass in hand. The cottages location gives good access to tour the local area,South to Dornoch and Dunrobin castle,North to John o Groats and Wick and even further afield to Durness and cape wrath are all within reach. We both thoroughly enjoyed our week away at this cottage as did our dog who was able to roam freely in the large fenced in secure garden. We were also fortunate with the weather so had no complaints at all . The village of Helmsdale is about a twenty minute walk away along the main road and our only slight disappointment was that the village itself did not have a lot to offer. However in summary this is a property which is well worth considering if you are looking for a relaxing break in excellent, clean ,well cared for and spacious accommodation and we will certainly consider using it again in the future...To be recommended"

"Thank you for the flowers and milk – a lovely gesture on arrival.Whilst we had a perfectly pleasant stay, please see below some feedback for you:The kettle spills every time it is poured. The double bed above the kitchen is supremely uncomfortable and we had to leave a day early as my back couldn’t hold up any longer. All the combe ceilings are terribly low – we all repeatedly banged our heads and made standing up upstairs almost impossible. There was no hanging space in the bedroom above the kitchen. The heating was erratic – either too hot or too cold. All sofas were extremely uncomfortable – the green one groaned every time it was used! The sitting rooms were packed with ‘stuff’ and felt very dark, damp and unwelcoming. The lighting in the sitting rooms was terrible – it made reading almost impossible. The bedside lamps in the bedroom could really do to be bigger or have brighter bulbs in them. The kitchen tap constantly dripped. The ensuite hot tap did not run or produced a mere trickle of water. The lawn and patio area were both full of weeks and needed some attention. There was no dryer but the washing line was across the road in a very unkempt field and therefore not accessible. All outdoor space was incredibly untidy and unsightly. The towels, while there was lots of them, were extremely thin and non absorbent."

"From the moment we reached the gates of S80476 we all drew in our breaths, and our dog, Rosie, started to whimper desperately to explore the garden. What a magical place on a hilltop in Navidale! Unforgettable scenery that seems to float to infinity. We didn’t see the dolphins that many previous tenants have had the privilege to encounter, which was a little disappointing, but this did not ruin our enjoyment. S80476 is a peaceful, tranquil place where you really can get away from it all. Sitting on the bench in the front garden and staring out to sea was so relaxing and a sight appreciated by our Rosie, too. It was her daily ritual with the French doors open, a soft breeze blowing in through the lounge. She absolutely loved it. S80476 had everything to offer in the way of quiet, peace, beauty, relaxation, entertainment and was well-stocked with household items needed for daily use. The cottage is well kept, clean and in a perfect location. Our thanks to Frank for all his advice before we arrived and his approachable manner if we needed anything during our stay. Five stars!"

"S22878 is a very special place. If you are looking for spectacular views, in a comfortable warm and tastefully decorated home along with a great kitchen to cook in, then look no further. In a world that can seem too fast where there is little peace here up a hill in Helmsdale I find the quiet I long for. We love this place so much that we are already planning to come back in the spring, ideally for a fortnight. We added up we have been coming here for around 10 years now. Much of our time is spent looking out across the ever changing sea, reading books or on a clear night looking up at the stars that seem to shine so brightly here. There are also great beach walks where we often see seals and other wildlife but hardly any humans, a rare thing these days. There are lovely restaurants in nearby towns and fun things to do if you want to do them. However if you are looking for a holiday with great mobile phone coverage, super fast broadband and top michelin starred restaurants, this is not the place for you."
