"The cottage is in a lovely area of the Highlands and is reached via a restricted access road, which sounds bad but isn't really a problem. On reaching the cottage we noticed that the owners have it on the sales market and it's surrounds looked in need of a wee tidy up and a bit of TLC. There is another cottage being built next door to Castle Hill but the whole week we were there we never encountered any builders so there was no building noise going on.The views are beautiful and very picturesque and It's only a mile walk to the beach so the dog got all the exercise she needed every morning. The entrance was clean and the bedrooms were clean in the main. However the master bedroom on-suite bin was full of ladies used sanitary products from a previous renter. The smell of smoke when the lounge door was opened was strong. It had a wood burning fire the door seals of which no longer work so when it's used the smoke escapes into the room. We were told the first stack of logs were to be supplied free but the basket was empty and the burner had not been cleaned out and was full of ashes. Logs can easily be purchased locally so it's not an issue if you want to use the burner. The kitchen was clean and the dishes, glasses etc were clean and tidied away. The kitchen has a professional cooker which is easy to operate. The microwave rotating plate had not been cleaned and had remains of spilled food sticking to it. Usually when we book cottages we find the fridge/freezer cleaned out but this time although the fridge was empty the freezer had previous renters left-over frozen food still in the drawers.None of the issues I mentioned were show stoppers and prevented us enjoying our holiday and we would go back to this area, as we have on previous cottage holidays. However I don't think Castle Hill cottage would be one that we would rent again."

"Firstly the cottage is clean, warm, and seems well maintained. Its position is excellent to walk out the front door and start a coastal walk with the dog. Woodland walks not too far away and the amount of deer we saw in Balblair woods at dusk was unbelievable. The cottage overlooks an inlet from the sea into a loch and from the cottage there was any amount of wildlife to be seen. Including seals following the fish into the loch. The rooms were spacious and the bed comfortable. For some reason our dog gets anxious when away from home but he didn't in this cottage. He was chilled out and so were we.If you haven't got a dog I wouldn't worry about any traces of previous visitors. The place was spotless when we arrived. If I was to make a suggestion for improvement I would put a bigger TV In the living room. (Not that we were staying in much) That shouldn't detract from what a nice place this is though, combined with an excellent peaceful location. We'll be back again subject to availability, which is always the downside after giving a positive review....everyone fills the vacancies!Oh and there were a few welcome goodies when we arrived which are always appreciated. Book it!"

"Very comfortable warm cottage with spacious bedrooms and comfy beds. Extra tv in bedroom helped when our teenagers wanted to watch something different from us.The cottage is very close to one of Brora's beaches with a 5 minute walk to the bigger beach. The neighbours were all friendly, waving and saying hello. Appreciated the tea, coffee and biscuits left for us on arrival. The local fishermen land lobster just metres from the cottage in the little harbour area, but Easter is too early in the season. The cottage owners are very friendly and on hand if you need any advice or information, but we like to explore an area ourselves and find out things as we go. Spent a lovely sunny few hours gold panning by Helmsdale, where you can hire all the equipment. The river is beautiful and heaven for those who love fishing. It was our first time holidaying in Sutherland and we will definitely be back."

"Beautiful cottage in a stunning location. Cottage very well equipped and was very cozy. Only negative point is the cleanliness in part (kitchen). The proprietor should replace their cleaner who is either vertically challenged, short sighted or both. Every room had an inordinate number of cobwebs on the walls above a certain height and hanging from the ceiling. My wife disposed of these with the feather duster. Inside the kitchen cupboards needed washed as did the walls which were marked with grease etc. Also, in the kitchen, around the recessed light fittings dirt and grease was evident. Also along the top edge of kitchen units and base of the fridge/freezer. A shame really as the rest of the house was immaculate, cobwebs aside."

"Middledrift is a lovely, well maintained, warm and clean cottage. It is in a great location, close to the local shops and very close to the beach. There is ample parking just opposite the cottage and a small private garden to the rear of the cottage, plus a large enclosed garden area, across the road, to the front of the cottage. From Brora it is easy to travel to many different areas nearby, such as Golspie and Dornoch. The scenery is beautiful with lots of interesting forest and beach walks and places of interest such as Dunrobin Castle, or further afield to the Castle of Mey.Overall a lovely holiday cottage, set within a beautiful, peaceful and friendly location and one which I can highly recommend."
