"Very well presented cottage in a lovely part of the world. It's close to a fairly quiet fast road but the noise from traffic isn't a problem. To be clear we are seasoned travelers and rent four or five properties in the UK each year and I guess are fairly picky. The ground floor layout and standard of finish is generally high and very comfortable for just two guests. The bedroom and bathroom are both lovely too and the bed was very comfortable and the property was immaculately clean throughout. The owner also left several items of produce which is always appreciated and when we spoke to him he was both helpful and kind. This cottage already scores well but could very easily be a perfect retreat with just a few minor adjustments and these are mentioned to hopefully assist the owners. As this is a dog friendly property, a cornerstone of any property we rent would be the garden. This cottage would really benefit from a secure (fenced garden) because the cottage is near to a road and any k9 toilet break means you too are out in whatever weather is about at the time. The garden could do with being checked too as there was a bit of broken glass around. Wifi is important to us and there was nothing in the property to tell us how to connect (ie the password), which meant a call to the owner, who fortunately was available and also fortunate that we had a mobile signal. However, it was only at this point that we were informed that the broadband was on a limited monthly download allowance and whilst it worked properly we were advised not to use it too much in case there'd be nothing left for those renters that followed. There were a few other small matters, which could so easily have been resolved by an in-house instruction manual, which would make life for the guests and the owners so much easier. All that said it's lovely but with a few tweaks could be memorable."

"This cottage is in a beautiful location no doubt about that. But I am sorry to say that the comfort factor is not good at all. The sofa in the living room was very uncomfortable with the casters broke making it uneven. Also after a tiring day out sightseeing you want to be able to relax but with the sofa having a low back that is impossible. Also the two chairs in the room are low backed bucket chairs which are extremely uncomfortable. I think that the dining table and chairs are too big for the room and take up too much room and look out of place. The tv is very small and the tv in the bedroom is neither use nor ornament. Our biggest disappointment however was that the cleanliness was not up to scratch as when we arrived we had to hoover all round the carpet edges in the cottage as we noticed many dead woodlice around the edges. There was seventeen dead woodlice under the tv cabinet and more under the sofa. All in all there was close to a hundred that we hovered up. Also the woodlice were getting in through the badly fitted patio door and we had to go to Dumbarton to buy some woodlice killer. Also the toilet in the main bathroom was leaking slightly and all around the toilet basin was always damp. The curtain next to the wardrobe was closed and when we looked behind it, it looked like the window and frame had not been cleaned for years. I am sorry to have to post these comments and I am sure that the owner who is a really nice man is unaware of these issues as he probably lets his cleaner get on with it and does not check the work. I am sure that the owners would not stay in the cottage themselves for more than one night before making the desired changes."

"We passed through Balmaha when walking the WHW and loved it so much we visited again after our trip was over. That was in 2015 and we always said we’d go back to stay. I booked S23227 for the location which is close to the pub/ cafe/ shop. It is off the main road so is quiet but is still close to the amenities. The cottage itself is lovely and welcoming with a spacious sitting room and conservatory. I was initially worried that it would be cold as the heating is electric plug in convection heaters but it was lovely and warm despite it being a cold Easter. It was spotlessly clean and had a well equipped kitchen. There was even a few bits to start us off, the owner obviously cares about the occupiers. You can park right outside the door. We had no problems whilst there and would definitely stay again - there are an abundance of holiday accommodation being set up in Balmaha but none such good value. If I was looking for less than perfect comments it would be the shower which was adequate but not excellent and the fact that the cottage didn’t seem to have its name anywhere outside and so was initially a bit tricky to find from the road, especially as it had gone dark - if you get to the pub you have gone too far."

"Excellent location and very nice setting, I would come back but it would be nice to see a few very easy and not costly improvements:- 3 wasps not all dead were in the cottage on arrival, not ideal with a child and I had to spend time catching them with cups.- Dead flies on floor which I had to sweep out.- Floor felt like it needed a good clean as was gritty under foot.- Bathroom is colder and I think would be better to have an electric towel rail for there rather than linked to having to put on the heating for the whole cottage.- moths drop out from the gap in the ceiling where the chimney from the wood burner goes in.- Missing a colander and large pan in the kitchen.- Despite following instructions in the book the satellite signal was not achieved for the TV, which was therefore not watchable for the whole time, Resorted to DVD's, but the DVD player jumps, so I would suggest advertising that there is a TV/DVD is removed or they are fixed.- It would be helpful to have in the book the location of the nearest shops."

"We had a great stay at the S23543. Everything was clean and ready to go when we arrived. The kitchen is stocked with all the needed utensils, and the appliances all worked nicely. We were able to wash a few clothes, in the washer provided, which was a great help as our clean clothes were running low. The bed was comfortable and the cottage warm.We like the location of Ben Alder, due to its closeness to Milton of Campsie. But it is also close to Kirkentuloch, a great little village with a number of coffee shops. There are also several grocery stores in Kirkentuloch, for purchasing needed supplies for use in the self-catering cottage. There is also an attractive Parish Church and interesting canal and path running through the town.I also like that the cottage is near the Campsie Fells, quite a beautiful set of hills, that one can walk in, if you enjoy that. All and all, we had a great experience. Recommended!"
