"On arrival we were surprised that previous reviews had described the cottage as spacious. As a group of 5, we found that the awkward size / shape / layout of the seating area made it difficult to all watch TV together in the evening. Whilst it's nice to have an extra sofa away from the TV for those wanting to read, the seating near the TV only had 2x two-seater sofas and 2x dentist waiting room- The seating area is also the through-route between the kitchen, bathroom, pool room and staircase, so it felt a bit like a corridor at times. I think the cottage would be most suited to a group that wants to spend evening sitting around the large kitchen table, or perhaps two couples who want to go out early hill walking and spend evenings in the pub. Positives: clean; plenty of hot water and the shower was good; corner room bed was comfortable; pool table was great; the north-east facing garden has views over countryside; the wifi was fine; there are a 2/3 really good National Trust properties in the wider area but driving there takes quite a while. There's a steam railway close by. Negatives: the property is right next the A52 so there is 50mph traffic noise from 6am; bathroom radiator is too small for the room which is cold; condensation problems causing puddles in the bathroom and kitchen; bathroom and kitchen floors are freezing, bring your slippers; cooking was challenging at times due to poor quality pans, but the oven was good. Overall, we thought the property was quite expensive for what we got, compared to others we have stayed in, especially as it isn't in the most popular location."

"Merry cottage is in a good location for most peak district activities and is generally comfortable but when you leave your comfortable house for a holiday to relax, having the comfort to do so is important in my view. The property is average in our opinion. The downstairs loo has soot on the ceiling and needs painting but also pointed to concerns about the oil boiler. i would suggest this is redecorated and sorted out asap. The overall condition is ok but the property needs redecorating downstairs, and the sofa is uncomfortable. The garden is small but ok. It could be better arranged with a couple more chairs. The bedrooms are comfortable but the fire doors need doorstops. The bathroom needs renewing due to a recent bath leak and the shower hose leaks.I left a personal note for the owners on leaving because We felt strongly that some of these improvements could be made quite easily. We haven't received a reply personally but still hope to do so even though we have now made a public review. The property was acceptable as we booked late but we won't repeat out business unfortunately."

"Wish I had read previous reviews before booking as they reflect the standard of the property. Although in a lovely location with a couple of good pubs, walks etc the house needs a thorough overhaul. Lots of cracked scuffed walls, missing handles on kitchen cupboards, extremely uncomfortable sofas, TV with distorted sound, mould around the bath and soot or something all over the walls in the downstairs toilet where the boiler is and the catch on the front door did not work so you had to lock yourself in. These are just some of the issues. Although it doesn't advertise WiFi I don't know many places that don't have it these days and would have been useful for looking up information about the area. Also there was not a visitors book so we had no info on the house including emergency info ( we did text the owner but no reply). The garden is tiny for a family style house so nowhere for the little ones to safely run around."

"We really enjoyed our stay at Oldfield Barn. The house is very comfortable - a real home from home. The owners, John and Barbara are lovely people and welcome you warmly. They leave you a welcome pack which includes milk and bread - as well as biscuits! There are other little touches of thoughtfulness throughout the house, esp the great bath sheets. There are lovely views of the Peak District from most of the windows. Our boys loved playing football and using the rope swing in the paddock. The hens were very friendly too. The Barn is in a great location - handy for adventures at Alton Towers as well as a quick drive to the Peak District and to nearby shops in Leek. We visited The Roaches (4 miles north of Leek) which had fantastic rock formations and walks, Alton Towers, Kedleston Hall, Dovedale, the Manifold Valley, Edale, Castleton and Chatsworth. A busy but relaxing and enjoyable week. Thanks!"

"Cottage was well equipped in a decent location with pub and shop a short walk away and the beautiful manifold valley close by. Modern house without much character and no welcome pack, no visitors book no instructions on appliances or rubbish collection and no contact on arrival from owner. Cleaning was just ok on arrival, think there was a leak under bath but it didn't affect our stay. Garden space very limited, 2 seats around a bistro table and no space for anything else. Lounge sofas very uncomfortable, felt like there was a cricket ball stored in the seat cushions. Plus points were spacious inside, nice loft conversion, lovely big fridge freezer, loads of cupboard space, decent eating space, downstairs loo, parking for 2 cars on drive, quiet road with quick access to playing field. We had a nice holiday here and the pride was right for the accommodation."
