"I booked Winnie Cottage about 10 months in advance of our holiday and kept a keen eye on the reviews. I was a little concerned about a few of them and am happy to put a few things straight for other people who are thinking of booking the cottage. There is nothing at all wrong with Winnie Cottage. It is a delightful cottage in a lovely part of the world. The hot tub, sauna, waterbed and underfloor heating add the touches of luxury you appreciate on holiday. The cottage has Sky TV including full movie and sports packages. There are TVs in all the bedrooms and the kitchen (and by the hot tub). What you watch is controlled by the sky box, so all TVs will show the same programme, but you can watch DVDs independently. (One of the bedrooms has a blu-ray DVD player, so you have options)The outdoor space is very good. We sat outside on a cool summer evening and ate pizza by the patio heaters, which were very effective. The hot tub is excellent...roomy and with great jets and lights. the view from the hot tub is across fields. We enjoyed watching birds play and watching the two horses that live in the field below. On the final night, we saw bunnies in the field, too. The sauna is great; our typical evening was; cocktail in hot tub, sauna, shower, bottle of wine with a movie....great holiday routine! The waterbed was really comfortable. The whole cottage is designed for you to relax and unwind and this is exactly what we did. There are great places to visit near the cottage. We walked down to The BlueBell a couple fo times and enjoyed the food and atmosphere this little pub offers. We took the train from Prudhoe to Newcastle or The Metro centre a few times; the station at Prudhoe has free parking or you can book taxis easily enough to take you down and back again (It cost us around £4.50 for a taxi to Prudhoe). Northumberland has loads to offer from fantastic National Trust places (esp Cragside and Lindisfarne) to great beaches (esp Druridge Bay). Beamish is a 30 min drive from the cottage and well worth a visit. So...a great cottage in a great place. So why the previous negative reviews? I will be really honest here as I know that some people reading this, like us, do not have money to throw away and the holiday you book will be the only one you take all year and you want to get it right. There really is NOTHING wrong with Winnie Cottage and you can book with confidence. The owner was at the end of a phone the whole holiday and was very helpful in fixing any little problems that arose (in our case it was a broken DVD player...fixed straight away) However, this is not a cottage for everyone and you need to make the right decision. If you are looking for a cosy place with a great kitchen for cooking and a sweet lady owner who cooks a homemade cake on arrival for you, this is not the place for you...Mark's idea of a welcome pack was wine (which suited us fine!!!). If you want cups of tea in an armchair with the whole family around an inglenook fireplace, there are probably better places for you out there, if you want to serve up culinary delights to you family every night you will probably get fed up carrying everything up the stairs from the kitchen, if you have young children who are not confident on stairs you will probably struggle here as there is a lovely spiral staircase going down to the kitchen, if you want that antiseptic clean feel of a 5 star hotel, you may want to book a modern hotel rather than a cottage (the place was clean, do not worry about previous reviews. I gave an 8 rather than a 10 as my daughter found rubbish under the bed on our final day when she was packing...the cleaner had obviously not moved the furniture to clean under it, but I know Mark would have been straight on to it if we had spotted it earlier, the kitchens, bathrooms and dining room were beautifully clean) ....but you could write a list like this for any cottage. The fact is that no cottage suits everyone. We like old fashioned and characterful, we like peace and quiet with the option of going out into the world to do tourist things, we love beautiful scenery, we like to walk to a pub, we like little luxuries like a hot tub and sauna, we like free wi-fi, we like entertainment options for teenagers, we like to feel a bit spoilt, we like to be warm, we like to relax. If you fit that brief, you will love Winnie Cottage and can happily ignore the couple of negative reviews...they do not apply to you; I think they must have been written by people who, unfortunately, chose a beautiful cottage that just did not suit their needs. Look at the pictures, read the description and, if you think this is the place for you, book with confidence...we have just returned from a great 2 week holiday here and, for people like us, happily recommend it!"

"Just returned from a 3 night stay here over bank holiday weekend for my 30th birthday and we had such an amazing time. The cottage itself is stunning and finished to a very high standard - it's homely and rustic due to many of the original features but is also fitted with modern and high quality fixtures, fittings and appliances throughout. All 3 floors are very spacious, the beds were extra comfy and the 3 ensuite bathrooms were handy especially with there being 10 of us. The hot tub is kept a short walk away from the main house in a summerhouse with a little terrace which was also lovely and a bit further up there's a BBQ area in the hills exclusively for guests. This was amazing and we BBQ'd 2 nights on the trot due to nice weather and stunning scenery. The owner Nicola is lovely, helpful and informative and gave us a tour of the house when we first arrived, it's obvious that she really does care about everything right down to the smallest of details. The bottle of fizz, tea, coffee and milk and hand soap in all the bathrooms etc is also a nice added extra. There are some beautiful walks to do in the local area although not much in the way of pubs / shops, however we took more than enough food and drink for the weekend so this didn't matter to us. It is only a short drive away from other places and we did Go Ape at Maften (40 mins away) and also visited Corbridge (30 mins away). I would highly recommend this place to others especially for large family / friends get togethers, we absolutely loved it and will definitely be back."

"We came here in March for a family get away and was blown away from the start, the lovely host nicola met my parents at the property and was so very helpful and presented them with fresh flowers and a bottle of champagne which came in handy for my sister in laws birthday while we was there. The house was spotlessly clean and we wanted for nothing. The furnishings were lovely and the beds were super comfy. My brother cooked a big Christmas style dinner on the Sunday for Mother’s Day and had all equipment needed to do so, and the use of the dishwasher meant a less painful clean up afterwards :) The hot tub was a luxury bonus and many hours of relaxing were had here. There was plenty of fun had also round the large dining room table playing games and drinking gin surrounded by my family which we don’t get to do very often. My nephew (5) has loved every minute of our week at the old miners hall and tried to get me to hide behind the sofa so we didn’t have to go home :) Rookhope is a gorgeous little village and brilliant for long walks in the beautiful scenic country side. We also had a couple of fab days out at highforce waterfall and beamish museum which I would highly recommend to people of all ages! All in all I cannot fault the old miners hall, the owner nicola or the location one bit and can not wait to return in the future, the only complaint I have was having to leave such a wonderful place :)"

"We stayed here for 5 days back in January. Problems we had were the bath upstairs couldn't be used for the entire stay after it would not drain, this was reported immediately but couldn't be fixed during our stay. Also the TV outside wasn't working, to be fair it was fixed but on our last day. Again this was reported immediately. When we checked out on our last day I sent a text to the owner Mark apologising that we couldn't fill the hot tub as the outside tap and hose were frozen. I received a text back acknowledging this but also accusing us of turning off the hot tub and stating it wouldn't be ready for the next people to arrive. I can assure the people who were arriving on the 27th January that we did not turn off the hot tub. We were impressed with certain aspects of Winnie cottage, its tastefully decorated and is in a very good location, the stairs leading down to the kitchen were not a problem for us. The under floor heating and log burner made for very cosy evenings. Our dog was very happy with the outside areas and it's very enclosed so we never worried about letting him out. To summarise it's a lovely cottage but the issues of the upstairs bath, outside TV and the attitude of the owner on our last day mean we would certainly not choose Winne cottage again."

"We went there with our grandchildren who were delighted to be staying in a real castle. The hot tub was used a lot and enjoyed by everybody. There was a generous welcome pack. The chimera was used every evening as we ate in the property. The playground equipment was also used by the children and we were surprised to see that this was for our sole use in a large garden. The house had a very modern kitchen and bathrooms. Wallpaper and furniture seemed to complement the castle theme. Beds were very comfortable. Just outside the bottom gate are two pubs and you are right in the centre of the village shopping area. The Co-op was very well stocked. Railway enthusiasts would be pleased to see the award winning station on the Weardale Railway that has a service on some days to Bishop Auckland. We visited High Force waterfall on the Tees and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum where we all went underground. Both are well worth a visit and not too far away. Sunday was spent at Beamish Museum about 30 minutes away. This is highly recommended and despite being a hot school holiday weekend, did not feel crowded. There was plenty of car parking space. All in all very recommended with no drawbacks. We would go again."
