"Our second stay at Gunpowder House which was as good as the first. It is an excellent, peaceful and private cottage in lovely surroundings. The garden was beautiful with autumn just arriving and the views are great. It was a bit chilly at night but the very efficient heating soon saw to that. The only minor downsides we can think of is the distance from where you park your car to the house and it is up quite a steep incline, which could be an issue for people with limited mobility. Having said that, you could park outside the front of the house to drop people and stuff off but the path is still a little steep though not too bad. There is no Wi-Fi but a there is good 4G signal. The welcome pack was minimal compared to other cottages we've stayed at but it's not a deal breaker. Our dog loved the enclosed garden and there are nearby walks to enjoy. Whitby is less than 15 minutes drive away and on the way in a stop at Sandsend is recommended. Other nearby local attractions are Runswick Bay, (check tide times first as when it comes in it's in!), and Scaling Reservoir. A bit further away is the village of Goathland, of course famous for being Heartbeat's filming location, and the North Yorkshire Moors. We will definitely be back again."

"Delightful and charming *small* cottage :-) Great accommodation for the two of us. Limited fridge capacity, but otherwise cooking/kitchen facilities all OK.Lack of WiFi was a disappointment, but no real big deal. The TV is very elderly (can't remember when I last heard the term "Nicam"!!)... remote control was tricky to operate, sound quality was not good, but again, not a major problem. Location: 10 miles south to Whitby, similar distance north to Saltburn/Marske. And in between, beautiful places like Staithes, Runswick Bay, Iron Stone mining museum, etc. Beyond Whitby (and its Abbey ruins, complete with Dracula stories) is Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough (with Castle ruins dating back to Roman times). In land is the North Yorkshire moors national park. The nearest pub (Brown Cow, 100 yds-ish) most excellent, very friendly welcome, fab ales, and I've never been served such an enormous Gammon Steak (one of the local - and again very friendly - dogs helped me out with that one!)Village chippy serves freshly cooked-to-order food; Again, 100 yds away and very friendly.Best of all though - everyone we met was very friendly, welcoming, and good-natured... be prepared for long conversations with complete strangers!"

"I find doing a review of this cottage very difficult. In many ways it was clean, comfortable and relaxing and it is in one of our favourite areas. However, in some ways, there is room for improvement. For example, the stairs are narrow with very low headroom (I banged my head at least a dozen times). But that wasn't the biggest problem. We were awoken in the early hours by a loud warning from one of the fire/CO alarms, with a recorded message telling us repeatedly that the battery needed replacing. I found it impossible to access the battery compartment anyway, despite standing on a chair at the top of the stairs. We didn't sleep much that night.Next morning I rang the local agents, Yorkshire Cottages, to express my concern. Although they sent a handyman round to sort it out, they didn't seem at all concerned that there is no procedure in place for replacing batteries in the alarms of their cottages (manufacturers usually recommend every 12 months). I wrote to Yorkshire Cottages afterwards about it and they didn't reply or even acknowledge my letter. We won't be using Yorkshire Cottages again."

"Very clean and tidy, well situated, a nice welcoming pack and having all the equipment required for home catering. The large garden was well kept and we didnt find the distance from the car parking area to the house as problematic as others appear to, as you can park on the road outside to load and unload. The one disappointment we did have is that on arrival we found that there is a house rule that dogs must not be left unattended, which was problematic as it was our intention to eat out each evening. This should be made clear at the booking stage, as it did have an effect on the overall quality of our holiday and we would not have booked this property if we had known of this house rule.Wi-fi and a larger television would also enhance the property but for persons with a dog who are happy to eat in, and who enjoy walking and excellent scenery it is a very pleasant place to stay."

"We are a family of five and we found the accommodation to clean and homely and big enough for us. We all found the beds to be comfortable, and I especially loved the huge bed in the main bedroom! We appreciated the welcome pack of tea, cakes, milk and biscuits meaning we could have a cup of tea on arrival before unpacking. The house is located on a quiet street and it has sea views from the back bedroom. There are pubs and a shop within walking distance and Saltburn is a short 5 minute drive. We had a minor maintenance issue during our stay but had good communication with the owner who promptly visited the property to assess and sort. The DVDs, games and jigsaws were appreciated and were well used during our stay. We found the house to be a home from home and we were sad when the time came to leave."
