"More attention to detail is needed when cleaning, particularly in the storage area in loft bedroom and the loft bathroom. Bed linen has seen better days. Some kitchen utensils sticky and baking trays definitely seen better days. Table mats sticky and dirty. The grass needed cutting which made it unpleasant to sit in the garden. No welcome pack so beware if you are arriving late. Stairs are very steep and there is no toilet on ground floor. Steps into front door very steep although it is easier to go in the back door. Designated car parking space was apparently repaired on our last day however there is still a dip on driving into it and there are lots of pot holes. You either have to reverse in or out and along a long narrow road. You cannot see the car from the cottage. There is parking on the road however which is a safer bet.Good information packs available about surrounding areas with places to visit, walks, etc.Good base to visit this beautiful part of the country if the cleaning issues are dealt with, in a lovely little village with lots of local amenities and lovely walks."

"The cottage was very comfortable, lovely and warm and cosy.John was so helpful and friendly. We had a lovely stay here, enjoying the splendid views from the conservatory and front room .Hopefully it would be helpful to reiterate what a couple of other reviews said that the property is on split levels and there is a step down from one part to the other and the stairs are quite steep if you are getting older! Also there is no washing machine for which I think there may be technical water supply reasons for not having one. The owners do I think have information about a laundry service. The cottage is in such a lovely location and has footpaths all around straight from the property. We were pleased with them as there were no stiles to access most of them , at the beginning anyway ; (our dog is no longer allowed to jump over styles.). I did not venture very far along them as our dog cannot walk for too long nowadays. John also allowed us to excercise our dog in one of his fields which which had no sheep in it at that time."

"My family and I had a lovely time wandering around the peaks next to Ellers bank cottage. The cottage was very well equipped and we had a very nice fire in the wood burner on the last day as the weather became cooler. (we brought our own logs and kindling with us to continue the fire as there is a starter set only) We took our dog, a small Springer, with us. I made sure she was always cleaned off before she entered the living room after having been out. There were a lot of steep stairs so I would not recommend anyone to stay in this cottage if they have issues with mobility. Also in the small garden area, it is a tiny yard which is accessible to other households and there are steps leading up to a small grass area with a table. All in all, we had a few wonderful days staying at this cottage, it was quirky and just in the right place for many walks to the peaks, only a few minutes walk to the town of hayfield, pubs and local shops to buy provisions from."

"This is a majestic property in a truly stunning location. Immense views, astonishing sunsets, all amidst the backdrop of distant hills and high peaks. Remote enough for those who want to get away from it all, yet close enough to Whaley Bridge for shopping and essentials. A special word must go to John and Lorna, proprietors of Blackhill Gate and neighbours in the farm next door. Delightful people. Kind and generous and knowledgeable. I truly cannot say enough good things about this holiday. It was wonderful in so many ways. If you love high peaks or woodland trails, babbling brooks or churning rivers you will find them all in this near perfect little corner of the world. And yes, we will be returning."

"Great attention to detail in the presentation of The Cottage, every necessary item was thoughtfully provided in the kitchen, for example. The Cottage is attractive and cheering, even in winter. Its location makes it ideal for touring the northern Peak District and it has handy access to the Manchester area if required. The owner was very helpful when contacted prior to the visit and provided useful information by email. The Cottage is dog-friendly - which was a must for us. Pleasant neighbours. Overall, highly recommended we would certainly like to return one day."
