"Stayed in Threlkheld before so I knew what to expect. There are 2 pubs. The horse and farrier do excellent food and you can take your dogs in. But it’s very popular so you need to call in advance. The accommodation is very basic, but it has everything you need for your stay. There was even complimentary tea, coffee and milk. Along with washing up liquid etc... the owners kindly let us take a second dog but you need to enquire before you book. Our dogs are fairly small so would be different if you had large dogs. The building itself is very old and the floors and walls are uneven. This added to the overall experience and even though on the main through road it was very quiet. My only niggle was that the windows are old and not very draft proof. This was fairly uncomfortable sitting in the living room. We counter acted this by having the log fire on. There are fantastic views of Blencathra from the landing window and some good walks from Threlkeld. Overall, I’d be happy to return here as it is a great base to explore the lakes - but ideally, you do need a car as there are no shops. Keswick being the closest approximately 4 miles away."

"Lovely cottage approx 25 min drive from Keswick. Felt remote and tranquil with immediate access to walking paths. Borrowdale Youth Hostel is closest amenities with a bar (one mile walk along the river). WiFi and incoming landline were problematic however the owner was most efficient in getting BT out to look at it. A digital detox isn’t a bad thing... closest 4G is up the hill along the track. Vodafone had best coverage by far.In terms of access, the bridge to enter the property is very tight. It’s a miracle we didn’t damage the car. Neighbours turn their vehicle at the turning point just beyond the bridge and approach from the other direction which is much better."

"Didn’t use the car for the first four days, walking out fro the cottage straight on to the fells, all the way to Ska Fell, a great 22Km round trek. Excellent cottage, with wonderfully hidden nooks and corners full of surprises. Very comfortable beds and furniture, an well appointed with a full suite of appliances etc. to ensure continued support for the holiday. Our advice to anyone new to Rossthwaite would be to arrange a delivery from Tesco with all the groceries etc you will need for the week, with perhaps a mid-week top-up from Keswick; the will allow you the maximum time to enjoy this Jewel in the Lakeland area."

"The cottage was in a lovely location and very characteristic. Unfortunately it was not child friendly due to stone fireplace and stairs. Also, there was lots of dog hair on the floor and the cottage also smelled of dog. Our children were covered in dog hair from playing \crawling around on the floor. We hoovered the floor twice ourselves (however this is not something we should have had to do ?!) but it was still full of hair (including up the stairs and top bedrooms !) . This was not hygienic for ourselves or our children . Additionally, there was no highchair which we had requested in advance of our arrival."

"We enjoyed this lovely old cottage. It’s very atmospheric and quirky. The place was very well equipped with everything we needed and we appreciated the two fridges. The location is lovely with plenty of walks from the front door. We would definitely stay again. The only slight downside was that some people complained of the cold the first night. The general consensus fwiw was that the food at the pub in Stonethwaite (short walk) was better than the local in Rosthwaite but it was great to have both easily accessible"
