"We booked Rickerby House to treat our family to a holiday. The location of Portinscale is fantastic and the local amenities are fabulous. The house itself has brilliant parking capacity and looks impressive from the outside but that's as good as our experience got.The rooms are spacious and it has some lovely period features. Most of the beds were comfortable. The owners have obviously spent a lot on fittings (sinks, taps, log burning stove etc) but have not maintained or given the property a deep clean for many years. The furniture looks like it's from a student bedsit. Old, dirty and literally coming apart. (I have photos unfortunately not able to attach them here-will send by email)The floor had been laid on top of a previous floor, so the creaking noise was unbearable. Especially when you have little ones to put to bed.One of the rooms with a king-size bed has a door that does not shut. We had to keep it shut with a bin or handbag. Isn't ideal when there's many people in the house. Windows don't stay open as the cords have been cut. We were fortunate to have lovely weather but roasted inside the house. We ended up propping up one window with a coaster for some air. The same window had a nail sticking out of the blind pull chord so I was injured from that. ( have a photo)Wardrobes in master bedroom don't shut and again we had to prop it closed using cardboard. The tap in the main bathroom woke everyone up a couple of mornings as it produced a high pitched screech. (Again I have evidence but unable to attach)The general standard of cleanliness was unacceptable. The rug was full of grey fluff and balls of hair which caught on your feet. (Again I have a photo). We actually hoovered it ourselves daily but the hoover smelled and didn't pick anything up. The replacement 'plug' for the broken bath plug was covered in mould as was the bath mat, as was the washing machine and dryer. The walls are damp and peeling in places. Someone seems to have painted halfway up the walls and stopped when they can't reach. Luckily the bed linen and towels were clean or we would have walked out. There is some nice artwork on the walls but the money would be better spent on a deep clean and maintenance. There seems to be no regular dusting or cleaning around the house in general though as the house was covered in dust. The kitchen table was full of crumbs and sticky. I really feel like this house was massively overpriced for the state it was in. Also unsure of why we needed to pay a damage deposit as there's not much in there to damage. A hostel would be cleaner. Very disappointed because this could be a stunning house with a little bit of care. We were all glad to get home. There was no comment book in the house so I do wonder how long these issues have been left unattended to. The caretakers number was in the kitchen but we didn't go on holiday to wait in all day for someone to fix someone else's house. Also the amount of issues would be impossible to fix in one day.Such a shame as it could be perfect if someone actually showed the house some care."

"While we enjoyed our stay & made the best of our time........The macorator in the en suite goes off during all hours of the night & is very loud!Advertises free WiFi, your device will load the WiFi symbol but it does not work (didn’t for us!) Advertises bathrobes supplied, we didn’t get any! All the bits of hair/ fluff/ sand etc had been swept under the tables! Beware if taking your dog it does not state online they are not allowed in the carpeted rooms which only leaves the kitchen, entrance hall & conservatory which was too hot as we had fab weather & I imagine in winter it would be the opposite so not a safe option & on the back of the house so unless we sat in the hall or kitchen our pooch was alone!!!Our pooch is part of the family would not have booked here if this had been made clear online!!!Local bar is about a mile away & up quite a steep climb, nearest shops are in Maryport 3.5 miles away. Sky advertised but does not work so not sure what the honesty box for sky sports is all about! Misleading as I / we/ you book on the information supplied, when I phoned to book they even confirmed sky sports worked & you are asked to contribute £ in the honesty box. I don’t usually leave reviews but it’s unfair to advertise aspects which are not available or included especially re the pet. We would not return"

"Balamar was the perfect house in every way. The views are absolutely stunning and the house is equipped with everything you could possibly need. The garden is fully enclosed once the driveway gates are closed so it was ideal for the 2 wee dogs. The weather was awesome the week we were there in May so we utilised the very comfy reclining outdoor chairs. There’s also a nice wee BBQ. The conservatory is a lovely place to sit and read or just chill out. The showers are awesome, really powerful with endless hot water. Everything about this house is great! For us, as we like to go shopping and explore, the location wasn’t the best. Maryport and Allonby (the nearest towns) don’t have a lot to offer, though Cockermouth is really lovely and worth a visit (we went twice). But if you just want to chill, relax, walk, paint, read or just enjoy chillaxing with family, then this is absolutely the perfect house. The pub is in walking distance, it’s about a mile, and we had really fab food there and although it’s a real ‘local’, the staff were friendly and the sevice and food couldn’t be faulted!"

"We thought the apartment was spacious and furniture comfortable, the down side it was extremely noisey, dustbin wagons emptying bottle bins every morning very early on, also beer garden to the side of the property, and really inconsiderate people from the bar 18/20 smoking and letting children run and scream under the apartment in the evening, we even had some men a couple of evenings sat on the spiral staircase smoking and making a racket. We would not recomend staying with children as you would not get them to sleep. So for this reason we would definately not stay here again. Also access to the property not easy on a summers day as the lake inn at the top of the access road had spread chairs too far over so we were made to feel we were in the wrong asking people to move, In the end we parked elsewhere."

"Good location for walking in the Lakes and surrounded by stunning scenery (but no good views from the house). We enjoyed particularly good weather (summer 2018). The property was very clean and had all the basics you would need. Inside it had a good layout and a nice feel. Stylistically a little tired in places. However there were several niggles: the double bed was really uncomfortable (hard and uneven - like the springs were pushing up in the wrong places); I thought we were getting a secure place/garden for the dog to be let out but there was none; the parking space was so narrow that we scraped the car reversing in despite all our efforts (this is something that could surely be sorted??). Would probably go there again - but mainly because of the location."
