"We booked Orchard Cottage for Christmas 2018 or the two of us and our 3 dogs, we arrived early and the keys were ready for us which was a bonus. The layout of the cottage is great, the kitchen / dining room is huge and very well equipped, the quality of the appliances was first class, as were the pans / crockery - such a refreshing change. Cooking Christmas dinner was an absolute breeze. There was a lovely supply of tea and coffee on hand for when we arrived which was great, all we need to do was locate the milk we'd taken which was easy enough, so a lovely cuppa whilst we unpacked the car.The sitting room was cosy with a wood burning fire, it was an education for us as we've never used one before but soon got the hang of it, we didn't use the map room as it was a little chilly but this would be a wonderful room to sit and read in the summer months. The boot room was also an added bonus, lots of space, a washer / dryer, vacuum cleaners and spare household items (loo / kitchen rolls, fire lighters etc) too.The outstanding quality of the accommodation continued upstairs, the master bedroom with a super king size bed AND superior bedding (as was the 2nd bedroom - twin beds) and large thick towels, the bathroom again was of exceptional quality and I was impressed (and a little spoiled) with Molton Brown shower/bath gel and hand wash in the bathroom. Our dogs loved the garden and the outside patio area, other than playtime with the dogs, we didn't spend too much time out there but can imagine it lovely in the summer, we did quite a few walks from the door and also visited Lowther, Appleby and Pooley Bridge too.The village is very quiet with no facilities at all and that suited us, there is a super village store about a mile and a half away (and a pub but it's not dog friendly) and a well equipped Sainsburys 20 minutes up the road in Penrith. The owners are attentive and it's obvious the thought and care they've put in to the cottage and we'll certainly be back. All in all, a wonderful Christmas Break in a lovely setting in the highest quality accommodation."

"The cottage is in a great location . Sadly when we arrived the log burner had no wood ready as promised and we had to contact the owner to ask her to turn on the central heating as she does it remotely from the comfort of her own home miles awa . She did however turn it in when we rang . The upstairs is much more modern and inviting then the downstairs . The living room has large old dusty wooden sideboards that take up way too much room for a very small lounge and it has just one small 2 seater with a very small tub chair . The rug in the lounge is about 100 years old and looks drab and didn’t smell to fresh either when me and my little girl were sat in the floor playing board games .there is an old fashioned drop leaf table rammed up against the wall but only has two chairs so couldn’t even sit together on a night to eat a meal we had to balance it on our knees. If the downstairs was updated and the old wooden sideboards removed it would be a lot more welcoming and maybe not to have to ask to ring for permission for the heating to be turned I would be a gateway help too .after speaking to the owner she mentioned she was having trouble with her cleaner and it’s obvious why everywhere was dusty and the shower seal had mould all around it that I had to clean before we could use it .its a great shame as the location is great in a nice village but the cottage needs a little more effort from the owners . The guest book is filial if bead reviews saying people would never return. I would come back if it was modernised and access to heating was made easier .there is a raised pond in the garden which has obviously not seen clean water in years it had a pungent smell and was full of green algae"

"What a fantastic cottage! We had the best time staying in Orchard Cottage and didn't want to leave. The village was quiet and such a friendly community - we were there for Halloween and our daughter enjoyed handing out sweets to the locals who came around (we put a carved pumpkin outside so they knew they could come knocking) and then went to a few houses who were very welcoming and friendly. The local walking is great and its not far from Lacy's caves, which we were very excited to find were accessible again after previously being closed due to flooding. Local shop (driving distance) in the next village of Langwathby was great, and Penrith nearby has Morrisons, Aldi, Sainsbury's etc. so plenty of options available! There is also a lovely looking cafe a short walk from the house, but unfortunately we were so busy out walking the lakes every day that we didn't get a chance to go and check it out. As with all areas of the lake district, it involves driving...but that is expected anywhere you stay. But as far as the cottage is concerned, it is an exceptionally well equipped cottage which absolutely everything you could need. The hosts are great and were around if we had any questions as they live nearby. The icing on the cake was being able to stay in such a lovely property, relaxing by the fire at the end of the day with the dogs snoring away at our feet. Our week staying at Orchard Cottage was fantastic and we cannot wait to go again!"

"Stayed in Threlkheld before so I knew what to expect. There are 2 pubs. The horse and farrier do excellent food and you can take your dogs in. But it’s very popular so you need to call in advance. The accommodation is very basic, but it has everything you need for your stay. There was even complimentary tea, coffee and milk. Along with washing up liquid etc... the owners kindly let us take a second dog but you need to enquire before you book. Our dogs are fairly small so would be different if you had large dogs. The building itself is very old and the floors and walls are uneven. This added to the overall experience and even though on the main through road it was very quiet. My only niggle was that the windows are old and not very draft proof. This was fairly uncomfortable sitting in the living room. We counter acted this by having the log fire on. There are fantastic views of Blencathra from the landing window and some good walks from Threlkeld. Overall, I’d be happy to return here as it is a great base to explore the lakes - but ideally, you do need a car as there are no shops. Keswick being the closest approximately 4 miles away."

"We returned to Merle Bank almost exactly 2 years after our 1st stay there. Again the property did not disappoint. It is a beautiful house with all we needed for a self-catering holiday. The kitchen has everything we needed to make our meals from scratch. The beds are comfy although please be aware the stairs to the uppermost double bedroom are quite steep. It is a 5-10 minute drive into Keswick. There are 2 local pubs and the Horse and Farrier serve excellent meals but advised to book. It is a great base for walking holidays. A car can be brought up to the rear of the property for loading/unloading but must then be moved either to a small car park nisext to the property at weekends or if it is a week night then there is car parking at the top of the village a short walk away. We have very happy memories staying at Merle Bank"
