"We had a fantastic stay, beautiful weather helped tremendously! Fantastic facilities for kids, our 2yr old loved the slides and mud kitchen, but mostly kept taking us on trips around the garden. Older kids would have been entertained for hours.Great location for a fun packed week- around 30mins away from castles, zoo, ice cream farm...!Well stocked kitchen, great to have the washing machine and dishwasher there. Decent oven.Only a couple of things could have been improved... The twin room was part of the landing, which was a bit noisey and a couple of nights we had the landing light turned on in the room at 3am by one of the other family members nipping to the loo. Just adding a partition wall would improve this greatly. We ended up putting our daughter in the double room and we had the twin, not the most comfortable for a 6ft man to sleep in!Couple of beds were noisey just turning over was loud, and some were uncomfortable.Kettle and toaster took forever to boil and toast, made me truly glad to have a decent set at home! The travel cot we were given didn't have a sheet on the mattress, thankfully id brought one with me.Other than that, had a great, quiet relaxing week. We would definitely recommend."

"Excellent week. Can recommend walks from the book on Mam Tor and Kinder Scout. Lovely, easy cycle from Buxton - Bakewell, on Monsal Trail - see leaflets. Windmill pub and Vale Inn are both good. Lyme Park House are also good, but glad we went early - got very busy by the afternoon. The cottage is an excellent base from which to explore the area. The book of walks seemed accurate, with its timings for length of walks, also flat walks along ridge to Shining Tor. Cycled from Blackwell Mill through trees and tunnels, which was relaxing and scenic. Bakewell touristy but pretty. The games room at the cottage was a massive hit. The house was clean and tidy and the welcome hamper, including scones, was wonderful Thank you. "

"This is a lovely cottage in peaceful surroundings. It is very well equipped and really nicely decorated, although I would agree with a previous review that the sofas could do with replacing, as they have definitely seen better days! I am a bit obsessed with good showers in cottages and I am pleased to say that this one did not disappoint! The weather was poor during our stay but we did have a quick wander in the garden/woods and I would say that if you have children - and the weather is kind - this facility is an added bonus!Overall, we had a lovely break at Woodland Retreat. Thank you to the hosts - the welcome pack of goodies was very kind too."

"Location gets 9 as it it very well placed for visiting the Peak District and has a great pub next door which serves outstanding food at very reasonable prices. Slight downside is it is right on the roadside and outside space is limited. Not a great place for children but fine for grown ups.Comfort and equipment gets nine as well, it was the best equipped kitchen I have experienced in such a place apart from a shortage of side plates. We never ran out of mugs or cutlery even when there were four of us in the house.I liked that there were two double beds rather than one and then twin beds. In a house more suitable for adults this is a plus."

"Really enjoyed our time at the cottage, good location (went to Chester Zoo twice!) Owners friendly and approachable, allowed us to stay another night as there was no booking after us (for a fee)The only negative was the bed - it was so uncomfortable!! We had to lay on the quilts from the other bed just to make it bareable but even then it was not a very restful sleep! The sofa wasn’t that comfy either so made it difficult watching telly and trying to relax in the evening. If it wasn’t for these things it would have been a 10/10."
