"We spent a very enjoyable fortnight at the cottage, and found the property to be full of character and tastefully modernised. The setting is beautiful; very peaceful but not isolated, and the cottage is surrounded by attractive countryside. The owner Julie was very friendly and welcoming, and we really appreciated the welcome pack provided that included extras such as wine and chocolates. The use of a washing machine and a large outhouse for bike storage was very helpful, and it was great being able to use the wood burner and control the central heating ourselves. The kitchen appliances were easy to use, and as we were there for 2 weeks it was a bonus to have use of a chest freezer in the outhouse, as well as the freezer compartment within the kitchen fridge. In general the kitchen was well equipped for every day cooking/meal preparation, however in our opinion there were insufficient cups and other crockery items; we gave this feedback directly to the owner and she was happy to take on board for the future. The cottage is ideally located for country walks, and we particularly enjoyed being able to leave the car behind and walk to the village of Castle Carrock or the nearby Gelt Wood. Other places such as Brampton, Lanercost Priory, Birdoswold Roman Fort and Carlisle, were all easily accessible by car, as was Alston. Overall we had a relaxing stay in the cottage and found local people to be very friendly and welcoming - hopefully we will return another time. (A point to note about the layout of the cottage is that the small bedroom can only be accessed via the master bedroom, and they are separated by a single door.)"

"I seldom review holiday accommodation, however I feel impelled to do so with S14792 for several reasons. I include both positive and negative points in my review. Overall, I feel S14792 is over-priced for what is offered and that the emphasis on comfort is somewhat overplayed, and I do not deem it to be 'romantic' as advertised in some locations online. For this price range, I expect more in terms of the decor, the quality of the fixtures and fittings, as well as a more effective heating system and the presence of a small welcome such as a pint of local milk or loaf of local bread. The wood burner is simply not enough to heat both the main room and the water during winter. I would also illustrate that I am happy to put on layers and heat my own home in an environmentally conscious way, but given the price and that I was on a much-needed break, a more effective or indeed efficient heating system should be present. I hold the view that being environmentally friendly need not compromise ones comfort, but at S14792 this is the case. At this price point, I would simply not recommend this accommodation to friends or family, as you will have a more comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable stay elsewhere. Positive points include that the property is less than an hours drive from Newcastle upon Tyne, there is a co-op supermarket within walking distance and a good local pub which serves a very good Sunday lunch. Up to two dogs are allowed in the accommodation and the owner can provide additional sheets or blankets for furniture. Furthermore, the owners of the property are knowledgeable about the local area."

"We love this cottage. We feel at home the moment we arrive, there’s a great atmosphere and although close to the town of Penrith and the village of Calthwaite it feels a million miles away from the stresses of everyday life. We love coming here. It’s a few minutes out of Penrith with its lovely mix of independent and chain shops. Plenty of grocery stores too (M&S, Sainsbury’s, Booths and Morrison’s). The village is less than a mile away and has a pub (we’ve not visited). It’s a great base to reach further afield too. Carlisle is 30 mins away (by the A road and M6, but it’s prettier to take little country lanes, off the beaten track, and take longer to get there by passing through tiny hamlets and villages). The cottage layout is perfect as my elderly parents have the downstairs bedroom with large ensuite shower room, and I have the upstairs ensuite. Beds are huge and comfy. Plenty of storage space. The kitchen is large and well equipped with views of the courtyard. The lounge has three window walls with great views out to Saddleback mountain. We love to watch the birds at the feeder (positioned in front of one of the big picture windows), the hares and the sheep. Sofas and chairs are comfy and inviting. Liz, the owner, and Naomi, the cleaning lady, are both lovely ladies, making us feel very welcome. Had one request of the owner, Liz, this holiday and she literally sorted it within 10 minutes - can not fault the service at all. Brilliant cottage. LOVE IT."

"Visited this cottage several times, and already looking to book again. I take my elderly parents (Dad has limited mobility). The lounge is huge with three walls of windows, lots of light and great views. Open plan into the huge kitchen/diner that is fully equipped. There is a downstairs bedroom with a super-king bed that can be split into two singles (on request). It has an ensuite with large walk in shower. It’s also accessible from the hallway. Upstairs is a huge bedroom, super-King size bed, with ensuite shower and bath. The cottage is immaculately clean, very well equipped, comfortable beds etc. The village is walking distance and has a pub (not eaten there but smells fantastic). Very easy to reach the main A road into Penrith which has several eateries, several supermarkets (Booths, Sainsbury’s, M&S food, Morrisons), a lovely little 2/3 screen cinema, banks, shops etc. Lots of country lanes to reach Penrith, Carlisle, Keswick and the M6. Owner is such a lovely lady and the cleaning lady is such a great character. Can’t re I mend it enough!"

"This is a very clean and comfortable, well equipped self catering cottage. Situated in an idyllic secluded location in Northumberland. Not a town or shop for miles around and yet everything we wanted, right on the doorstop. Lots of beautiful, unspoilt scenery, lovely walks, very few people and they were very friendly. A village pub less than 5 minutes walk for some wonderful evening meals. An excellent selection of single malt whiskies to round off the meal. Old Pulteney, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Bunnahabhain, Tamnavulin to name but a few. The bird of prey centre is well worth a visit. The walk around Kielder water has some interesting sculptures. Hareshaw Linn Falls is a pleasant walk. The cottage owners were exceedingly friendly and welcoming and always on hand if anything were needed. For dark skies and star gazing, avoid the summer months, it doesn't get dark in mid June. This is a wonderful cottage owned by lovely people in a fabulous part of the country."
