"We had a few hitches when we arrived. Nothing was major at first but all gave the feeling that the place was in need of TLC. Only 2 logs for wood burner and they were wet and as we arrived late there was nowhere close to buy more so no cosy fire that we had looked forward to. There must have been a few wet dogs in the cottage the week before as by Sunday there was a definite wet dog smell downstairs which we worked out to be the living room rug plus the dust and dog hairs under the sofas. It didn’t look as if the sofas had been moved to clean under. On Monday night the smoke alarm failed and we replaced the battery with all three spares inthe drawer but all were duds and once again it was too late to get any spares so had to disable the smoke alarm overnight( it was my birthday and we’d all had a celebratory pre dinner drink n couldnt drive to the late opening shop for batteries! The cold tap in the bathroom was loose and moved every time we tried to turn it on and water went everywhere. Tightened it up as best could without tools but kept loosening. Needs to be properly fixed. The bathroom door had no lock so we had to whistle while we performed our morning rituals!!!!!and the door required a certain technique to close it as it didn’t fit the frame properly. This was obviously not a new fault as you could see the continued impact in the crack in the wall above the door frame. The garden was uncared for ( apparently due to terrible wet weather) and the fence was broken and the gate scruffy! On the plus side the Towels and linens were lovely and fresh, it was in a good location for us, if you don’t mind a fairly busy road, plus it was warm and cosy...... until the heating broke on Monday night. Had we not had friends coming on Tuesday and a business meeting planned for Wednesday we would have headed home at that point!!!The owner did get onto that prompt but no one could come until Wednesday. So Tuesday and Wednesday at least we had the wood burner. The electric heaters that were supposed to be there were not to be found in any cupboards, drawers or under beds. They turned up after the boiler was fixed, behind a chair in the lounge- the only place we didn’t look!!! The owner did get the boiler ‘non specific intermittent’ fault fixed and it worked for the rest of the week and he did bring us logs and take away the smelly rug to be cleaned on Wednesday, plus we got a sum back as compensation for the heating. This went some way to fixing our general disappointment. I would not visit this cottage again unless it had been refurbished and had a new boiler. However I would visit the area again. The walking is lovely and not too strenuous, the village was great with things to entertain those who aren't big walkers and you are very close to Chatsworth which is well worth a visit- house and/or gardens. If you can’t stretch to the entry price try the farm shop and cafe for some fab treats! The little cafe in Baslow on the village green was also very good. The cottage has great potential and just needs a bit of TLC and attention to detail to make it better."

"I would like to say what a great time myself, friends and family had whilst staying here recently. Considering i had never booked a trip before, and was concerned that 5 19-23 year olds staying for two of the three nights was not the most appealing prospect for any cottage owners, i was pleasantly surprised it was a no-questioned-asked/non-judgmental booking procedure. i found it extremely straightforward to book our stay and the owners of the cottage were quick to respond with my check-in/check-out questions and their responses were very friendly and welcoming too. The check-in/check-out procedure couldn't possibly have been any simpler! First impressions on entering the cottage, it was like a home from home, instantly putting all at ease and just as it looks in the pictures. The things which made our stay particularly memorable; the big open fireplace which really kicked out some warmth; ease of cooking due to the good straightforward appliances and complete range of crockery and utensils; the spaciousness of bedrooms, super fresh bed linen and large thick towels; and the lovely powerful shower, great for revitalizing walkers and fending off muscle aches! This cottage was loved as a place for friends, and later too as a place for family. Managed somehow to do the impossible - please both teenagers and (infamously fussy) 60 year olds! I would also like to add , having read a number of reviews on here, there are a couple of things i feel have been put across unfairly - arguably, the sitting room was just the right size for 5 adults, perhaps not quite 6, but considering the Baslow area provides such a great opportunity for getting out and exploring, weather permitting, it should hardly be a problem. The smaller size of the sitting room came more as a benefit to our party as with the open fire it warmed up immediately and made for an extremely cosy evening after a long days walk. The kitchen was fully equipped with every kind of utensil needed to make just about anything, and of perfectly good quality considering their constant use by holiday makers!"

"Our 15th stay at Brookside Cottage in the beautiful village of Beeley which we love. Lucky to stay here twice this year including a week back in May. We are well used to some of the cottages quirkiness but it’s starting to feel a bit unloved in places. We hope that the few comments we made in the visitor book (see below) this time get addressed as we love staying here.1. There had been a clothes aerial dryer in the garden for years, albeit a bit cronky. This visit it was rusted and broken / snapped and had been moved into the garage rendered useless. No replacement. Beautiful dry sunny weather all week and nowhere to dry our bath towels (only thing we had was a small clothes horse in the cottage which is broken also)2. In May when we stayed, the lights above the gas hob didn’t work. This visit still the same so we took the liberty of purchasing two new bulbs and replacing them ourselves. Job done! Very little expense but guests shouldn’t be expected to correct these things. Attention to detail is certainly lacking in places.3. Upstairs wet room still intermittently leaks water through the kitchen ceiling above the fridge freezer. It’s an on-going problem we’ve experienced before and the ceiling is badly stained. Obviously needs looking at!The new boiler is a massive improvement and is nice and quiet. The Devonshire Arms pub in the village is fantastic and food excellent and would highly recommend. Lots of walks from the door including to Chatsworth House (and back across Beeley Moor). We bring our bikes and enjoy the Monsal Trail, High Peak/Tissington and Manifold Way routes). Chatsworth Farm shop and café also excellent.Despite the comments we still love the cottage and hence keep coming back. Next year will be the first time we won’t be back for our usual week at beginning of May as it’s part booked already that week so we look forward to our 16th visit in 2020."

"What can I say other than we had a great time. When we arrived it wa thick snow and there had been lots of snow all over the country. There was a problem withthe water initially but that soon, almost magically, put itself right and we had a great time. 5 of us squeezed in here (4 adults and a baby) and we managed just fine for the 3 nights we were there but I'd suggest a maximum group of 4 adults really due to the size of the cottage. It's a great little place and the owners were very helpful. It has all the kitchen equipment you will ever need and I imagine it's a fantastic place to stay mid-summer as it is litterally next door to the Chatsworth House grounds and in the middle of most of the tourist attractions the peaks have to offer. A couple of pubs very nearby. the closest one was a little poor (Devonshire Arms I think!) so perhaps investigate before you settle down for a drink. If you like charm and character then this is the place for you."
