"The cottage is in a lovely area of the Highlands and is reached via a restricted access road, which sounds bad but isn't really a problem. On reaching the cottage we noticed that the owners have it on the sales market and it's surrounds looked in need of a wee tidy up and a bit of TLC. There is another cottage being built next door to S24337 but the whole week we were there we never encountered any builders so there was no building noise going on.The views are beautiful and very picturesque and It's only a mile walk to the beach so the dog got all the exercise she needed every morning. The entrance was clean and the bedrooms were clean in the main. However the master bedroom on-suite bin was full of ladies used sanitary products from a previous renter. The smell of smoke when the lounge door was opened was strong. It had a wood burning fire the door seals of which no longer work so when it's used the smoke escapes into the room. We were told the first stack of logs were to be supplied free but the basket was empty and the burner had not been cleaned out and was full of ashes. Logs can easily be purchased locally so it's not an issue if you want to use the burner. The kitchen was clean and the dishes, glasses etc were clean and tidied away. The kitchen has a professional cooker which is easy to operate. The microwave rotating plate had not been cleaned and had remains of spilled food sticking to it. Usually when we book cottages we find the fridge/freezer cleaned out but this time although the fridge was empty the freezer had previous renters left-over frozen food still in the drawers.None of the issues I mentioned were show stoppers and prevented us enjoying our holiday and we would go back to this area, as we have on previous cottage holidays. However I don't think S24337 cottage would be one that we would rent again."

"Although I can sometimes be a little too critical on reviews it has to be acknowledged that this is the best ever self catering accommodation we have ever stayed in. From its outstanding location perched on the hillside overlooking the bay and hills to the facilities and amenities within the cottage we could not find fault. The property itself is very spacious with good sized rooms throughout and well designed. It has all the equipment and more to ensure an excellent stay and make it the perfect home from home. The little things like the ornaments, artefacts and paintings make for a homely feel whilst relaxing .... nothing better than looking out over the bay from the patio doors with a glass in hand. The cottages location gives good access to tour the local area,South to Dornoch and Dunrobin castle,North to John o Groats and Wick and even further afield to Durness and cape wrath are all within reach. We both thoroughly enjoyed our week away at this cottage as did our dog who was able to roam freely in the large fenced in secure garden. We were also fortunate with the weather so had no complaints at all . The village of Helmsdale is about a twenty minute walk away along the main road and our only slight disappointment was that the village itself did not have a lot to offer. However in summary this is a property which is well worth considering if you are looking for a relaxing break in excellent, clean ,well cared for and spacious accommodation and we will certainly consider using it again in the future...To be recommended"

"Thank you for the flowers and milk – a lovely gesture on arrival.Whilst we had a perfectly pleasant stay, please see below some feedback for you:The kettle spills every time it is poured. The double bed above the kitchen is supremely uncomfortable and we had to leave a day early as my back couldn’t hold up any longer. All the combe ceilings are terribly low – we all repeatedly banged our heads and made standing up upstairs almost impossible. There was no hanging space in the bedroom above the kitchen. The heating was erratic – either too hot or too cold. All sofas were extremely uncomfortable – the green one groaned every time it was used! The sitting rooms were packed with ‘stuff’ and felt very dark, damp and unwelcoming. The lighting in the sitting rooms was terrible – it made reading almost impossible. The bedside lamps in the bedroom could really do to be bigger or have brighter bulbs in them. The kitchen tap constantly dripped. The ensuite hot tap did not run or produced a mere trickle of water. The lawn and patio area were both full of weeks and needed some attention. There was no dryer but the washing line was across the road in a very unkempt field and therefore not accessible. All outdoor space was incredibly untidy and unsightly. The towels, while there was lots of them, were extremely thin and non absorbent."

"Heaven on earth if you just want to get away from it all. The cottage is quirky and has everything you need except maybe bring your towelling dressing gown to help with the dash from the hot tub / shower although towels are provided. A thoughtful welcome pack was provided and beautiful fresh flowers. The cottage is warm (the dog loved the underfloor heating), welcoming and romantic and the location is amazing: In the middle of nowhere, unspoilt, but close enough to shops, pubs and beaches. It’s a good base to explore the distilleries and north coast. The owner is not too far away if help is needed and very much willing to give it without being intrusive. We needed rescuing from the ‘Beast from the East’ and Mackie was an absolute true gent and we can’t thank him enough for his hospitality. We ended up being snowed in half of our holiday which actually made it pretty special but means we have unfinished business! We will definitely come back and try out the other cottages too ( don’t worry they aren’t near to each other!).You won’t be disappointed!"

"What a delight when we arrived and discovered such a beautiful, welcoming and homely cottage surrounded by such a tranquil setting, with stunning views. We could not have felt more welcome. We very much enjoyed the treats you left (Especially the wine!). The flowers were unexpected and appreciated. Great wildlife watching especially the friendly Partridge that visited every morning. So much to see and do within easy reach. Beautiful sunsets enjoyed from just sitting on the decking or relaxing in the hot tub & an almost tropical beach over at Lochinver. We highly recommend the cottage. Just to reiterate what others visitors’ have said you will not find better hosts than Mackie & his family. Needless to say we don't want to go home tomorrow! Dave & Dawn plus Jacks the dog who also had a great time :)"
