"The owners seem to think going round with a vacuum cleaner and wiping the kitchen work top is all that is needed. Cobwebs everywhere - old, dusty ones, not fresh! Tiled floor filthy - has it ever been cleaned? Window bilnds are filthy - obviously not been cleaned for years! Oven was filthy - too dirty to dare cooking a pizza in it. Fridge door opens the wrong way - the door is reversible (a 10 minute job), so why hasn't it beed switched round? Mould on the bathroom wall, and on the shower cubicle; shower-head mouldy. Bathroom extractor fan filthy. Shaving light loose - moves down the wall when you switch it on! Layer of dust on the back of the bathroom door. No recycling facilities at the property (Cumbria is still in the dark ages - you have to take plastics 3 miles to Appleby; card, cans, glass have to be taken half a mile to the bins in the village centre.Shame about the above, the location is very good, and the layout of the barn conversion is probably the best laid-out holiday let we've stayed in in the past 10 years. The staff at the village pub (The Stag) seemed grumpy and the food was poor - only ate there once. Pub (Masons Arms) in Long Marton (the neighbouring village) was excellent - friendly staff, great food, and cheaper that the Stag in Dufton."

"Nice quaint cottage, in beautiful and quiet rural location. Having said that, the quiet location means noise does travel, and there is a local dog that barked continuously throughout parts of our stay. Not the owners fault, but be aware. The cottage itself had all the basics and essential comforts for our Christmas break. Comfy sofas, dishwasher and comfy beds.Only gripe with the cottage is the cleaning could be better, as there was dog hair in carpets.Another point to note of our stay, which is largely circumstantial, is that the holiday makers next door brought a dog. This barked and whined continuously and, as its a large cottage divided in 2 by a single door in dining room, this was an intrusion on our otherwise peaceful retreat. The dog owners also kept shutting the gate to the courtyard car park and letting the dog run loose with no consideration for us wanting to leave the property as it would escape! We did approach them but they refused to answer the door. We also realise from the visitors book that some guests receive a welcome pack (chocolates and/or flowers) but we saw nothing on our arrival. So there are some inconsistencies in the service received.Would we return? Maybe, but with lower expectations than we had this time."

"We have always been to cottages and taken our dog with us, The property owners have Always come to greet us and tell us what was what and that if we needed anything where to find them ,Little beck owners did not do this which was a little awkward when ,if we spoke to anyone not knowing if they were the owner or gardener!!! We found our holiday at little Beck very comfortable , There are just one or two little niggles that didn't make it perfect for us , ..Firstly ,as previously said the owners not introducing themselves, we couldn't loose our dog out anywhere just to stretch his legs , there was no where for us to loose him e.g (enclosed garden ) , with a working farm , there was no way we could have let him loose, so we had no chose but to take him out on a lead , ...Also the lack of up to date literature e.g maps, places to visit, ect ,everything was very out of date . also no view as such , althought once out of the flat it was beautiful ."

"We had a really great holiday at Little Beck. The cottage is clean and has everything you need for a relaxing break. Cleaning and everyday items were provided so you don't have to take lots with you. The bed is lovely and big and very comfy. We didn't feel the lighting in the cottage was a problem ( there are lots of lamps now so they might have added some to make the lighting brighter). Having the garden was handy but it is over the little road that goes to part of the campsite. Even though we were there the first week of the summer holidays it didn't bother us in any way and it was handy having the little shop at the campsite for provisions. There was some information about what to see in the area but I felt there could have been a bit more of this as well as some information on place to eat in the area."

"1st evening had to ask for clean bed linen as some hairs on bottom sheet. Kept waiting outside in the cold at 21:40hrs for more than 10 mins whilst a clean sheet found. Sheet/duvet/towels in places and smelt faintly dank - as tho' folded and stored before fully dry. Bed linen un - ironed which didn't help. Felt over all that cottage was tired/ scruffy and quite grubby on inspection. Walls/doors/skirting boards/ carpet/chairs were stained/marked , Some furniture noticeably dusty , ornaments ingrained dirt , blunt kitchen knives, rusty potato peeler etc. Kitchen cupboards could have done with cleaning.Would not recommend Cottage quite dark even with lights on as light bulbs low energy of insufficient wattage.Realise perhaps my expectations were too high for 3 star cottage."
