Staying in East Sussex

If you like your movie trivia (or just like spectacular English views), get down to the Seven Sisters Cliffs across the River Cuckmere to see the coastguard cottages used in Joe Wright’s 2007 film ‘Atonement’ and the dazzling white, chalk cliffs in the background. If you want some history - East Sussex is the place to be. Check out Battle, the appropriately named town where William the Conqueror first engaged the Saxons in 1066, or take a walk down the medieval streets of Rye.

"Very sadly this was not a good place to stay for us. We found the walls between the cottages very thin and lacking in insulation, we were awoken each night by banging on the bedroom walls, by the next door holiday cottage guests, which continued through the night so we had no sleep. There also seemed to be an incident at the farmhouse next door and although our sympathies go to the family involved, it was distressing to come back to the cottage to find many police cars outside and ambulances. I have to say though that the police were really kind and they do a good job, so it is definitely not a criticism to them. The holiday cottage people also had to give statements to the police about anything we had seen that evening. This continued all evening and made us feel very unsafe in the cottage. We rang the holiday cottage company and they were really helpful and supportive, relocating us the next day to another holiday cottage as we felt unsafe after everything we had seen. The holiday cottage booking company asked the owner of the cottage for a refund due to the circumstances, but she refused and stated that, the security of the holiday cottages had not been breached during the incident and therefore no refund would be given. We then paid again for another holiday cottage as we had only stayed for two nights at this cottage. Throughout we found any dealings with the owner unfriendly. We definitely wouldn't stay again and guests need to be aware that you can hear everything through the thin internal walls between the cottages.... toilets, lights coming on, talking, shouting, TV. On the plus side the cottage itself is very pretty and kept very clean. I hope that things settle down for the people involved and that they offer a more welcoming stay to new customers. Perhaps we just caught them on a bad day and that this cottage is usually much nicer. A huge thank you to the holiday booking company they were really superb in difficult circumstances - and we finished our holiday in a really lovely cottage near Lewes, so thank you. I would definitely use this bookings company again, very professional, but not this particular cottage."

"We booked Thornsdale for a family get together where we had plenty of room and the chance to spend quality time together without being in each other's pockets. A party of 8 adults who like to socailaise, walk, eat, drink and are very competitive! We got everything we could have wished for including excellent weather for October. Thornsdale was well equipped in every area and provided everything we wanted. We loved that we could sit outside together to chat, drink and enjoy the scenery. (Including the horses, hares and birds.)The well equipped kitchen allowed us to eat in and we enjoyed the joint challenge of a completing a large puzzle, over the whole stay, in the dining area. Space was not an issue. We played table tennis in the garden and pool in the games room. We enjoyed dancing, conversing and watching football by the beautiful fire in the lounge. The bedrooms were comfortable and clean and there were plenty of bathrooms for all. Iden was a lovely place to explore and we enjoyed a couple of lovely walks, especially the one that ended up with us all, including the dogs, having a fabulous Sunday Roast at The Inn at Iden. Highly recomended. A trip to Camber Sands and the Kings Inn for a drink afterwards was another added bonus. I really appreciated Davids attentive but laid back approach as our host. We all loved it and it was a special time together. Thank you so much x"

"We had a great time at S13980. We arrived later than planned but the owner kindly popped by the next day to check we were ok and to give some ideas of family friendly trips/restaurants which was lovely. The cottage is half of the building shown in the picture of the outside (other half is Russet Cottage) but has been cleverly designed to make the most of the space. We had two adults, a 6 year old and a 9 month old and it didn't feel cramped. The garden is surprisingly private and has beautiful views. We could hear some movement from our neighbours but otherwise felt the soundproofing was fine. The kitchen is open plan but has everything you need if you plan to eat in.We didn't have any issues with tv reception unlike previous reviewers and we didn't use the WiFi dongle provided so can't comment on that. The farm the cottage was on was lovely and the location was great. There are loads of walks nearby and we were made to feel welcome to walk around the farm grounds also. It's 10 minutes to Rye, Winchelsea and around 20 to Camber Sands, Bodiam, Tenterden and other villages. Lots of pubs nearby and a supermarket 5 minutes drive away so everything was easy especially as we can't do long drives each day with the baby so for us it was ideal. Overall we had a great time in a beautiful location with plenty nearby to do and see."

"We are a family of 4 (18 year boy and 15 year old girl) and a 3 month old puppy, Harvey. Everyone enjoyed the stay, nice rural setting staying in a traditional cottage with all mod cons.We had the freedom to roam the farmland and seeing the horses, ponies, chickens, dogs etc added to the experience.I spent many hours 'fishing' at the lake, however I was unable to catch any fish worth mentioning despite my best efforts. This did not take away the enjoyment of sitting besides a very pretty lake in a tranquil setting enjoying the peace and quiet. The rest of the family were more than happy to catch up with the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics in the very comfortable S57447. We were blessed with superb sunny weather which added to our holiday experience and allowed us to get out and about and explore the wider area.We had a fabulous 12 mile walk from Eastbourne beach passing the pier and continuing to Beachy Head. We enjoyed one of the best pub meals we have had at Beachy Head Pub.Also a must if visiting the area was a trip to the Eastbourne Harbour which was spotlessly clean and buzzing with atmosphere."

"We were very lucky with the weather, but the heat made the bedrooms very uncomfortable. The downstairs double was too small for two elderly people, I slept upstairs in the eaves which was stuffier especially as the window could not be any more than open 2cm. The lounge/kitchen is only big enough for two and we got sore necks looking up at the tv.When we arrived it was to a temporary mini fridge because the main fridge freezer had just broken down and would be replaced, it wasn't. However a broken toilet seat was replaced very quickly. The location was ideal for touring E Sussex and Kent, beautiful areas, and Camber Sands is 10 mins away."
