Staying in East Sussex

If you like your movie trivia (or just like spectacular English views), get down to the Seven Sisters Cliffs across the River Cuckmere to see the coastguard cottages used in Joe Wright’s 2007 film ‘Atonement’ and the dazzling white, chalk cliffs in the background. If you want some history - East Sussex is the place to be. Check out Battle, the appropriately named town where William the Conqueror first engaged the Saxons in 1066, or take a walk down the medieval streets of Rye.

"The cottage was very well equipped and had good wifi. The surrounding area outside was very peaceful and beautiful being in the country side but still only a few minutes drive up the lane to the village. The nearby pub at the top of the lane, The Rose and Crown, is excellent. There are only two points I would make. The sofa is definitely past its sell-by-date, being hard and flat. Luckily there was another identical sofa in the living area and we put the two base cushions from that sofa on top of the ones on the other sofa making it a bit more comfortable. The bed is wonderful, being a super king size with good quality cotton bed liven. The other point to make is that directly behind the cottage on the same farm there are several artists studios. The road to these studios runs directly into the farm stabling area and immediately past our kitchen and living room windows. On one particular morning there was a fair bit of traffic coming and going, at one point with a vehicle reversing back and forth up the road past our windows whilst another had an engine running. This did distract from the peace. Later in the afternoon the traffic then departed causing more noise.Apart from those 2 points, everything was very good with a nice welcoming pack and very welcoming owners."

"This cottage is set in woods about 1 mile walk from the village of Etchingham (you can walk across the fields - too muddy when we were there in February, or along the quiet minor roads) where there is a post office and very well stocked village shop. There is also an award-winning bistro in the former station master's cottage. The cottage is well equipped and very warm; wifi and mobile phone coverage; a selection of dvds (but no books). Probably less suitable for children as the garden opens out directly without a gate onto the minor road. Also don't go there if you don't like darkness at night and it's very quiet (except for the hooting owl)!"

"What a fantastic holiday in a beautiful, well equipped cottage with stunning views and very friendly, helpful owners! We could not have asked for more. The cottage was comfortable with everything we needed. Owners were always available, but not in the slightest bit intrusive. We all loved our regular visits from Bentley the peacock and Molly the dog as well as being able to see the horses and ponies everyday. The views are wonderful and the sunsets amazing. The cottage is in easy reach of local amenities, including an excellent pub at the top of the road and bigger tourist spots like Hastings, Rye, Camber sands, Herstmonceaux and Bodiam castles."

"The Barn conversion was well done, it was attractive and comfortable. The furniture and equipment were excellent, we particularly liked the walk-in shower. Quiet and rural location with countryside views of the surrounding fields. There were sheep in one field with a number of lambs, and another field had horses. The resident peacock put on a daily display for us. The access track is not a problem if taken slowly and the pub at the end of the lane is well worth a visit, good food. Also a well-stocked shop in the village. We enjoyed a relaxing and peaceful stay. The owner was friendly and welcoming but not intrusive. We hope to return."

"Located on private farmland at the end of a country lane. The barn is modern, very well equipped, clean and warm. There are unspoilt views from the bedrooms and living room across open countryside and fully enclosed garden/yard for parking your car and letting the children and pets roam. The owners are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them to make you and your pet as welcome as possible. In all this is by far the best property I have ever rented.Village shop about half a mile away which stocks everything you might have forgotten to pack along with a local pub which serves excellent food."
