Staying in East Sussex

If you like your movie trivia (or just like spectacular English views), get down to the Seven Sisters Cliffs across the River Cuckmere to see the coastguard cottages used in Joe Wright’s 2007 film ‘Atonement’ and the dazzling white, chalk cliffs in the background. If you want some history - East Sussex is the place to be. Check out Battle, the appropriately named town where William the Conqueror first engaged the Saxons in 1066, or take a walk down the medieval streets of Rye.

"A nice property in a quiet location overlooking fields and woodland. We took our large dog and there was plenty of room for him. The garden is fenced at the back adjoining a field that had sheep in it which might be a problem for some pets. A bridleway runs from the farm through fields, one of which was empty so we could let the dog off to run. We did a couple of local walks but did encounter a field of bullocks on the path which was pretty testing (and potentially hazardous), and on another day a few horses (less of a problem although they followed us all the way to the gate). Although the location is good, it is a fair way to anywhere (about 30 minutes to Eastbourne or Hastings). There are pubs within a couple of miles each way and it's just a few miles to Herstmonceux Castle (£6 to enter grounds - enough to stop us going in). It's definitely not Hailsham! For the tech addicts, there is no wi-fi. So if you just want a quiet spot to relax this is definitely the place for you."

"Cottage located in a beautiful area of outstanding natural beauty and great for exploring Sussex and Kent. Good courtyard area to sit and it was enclosed so our dog couldn't escape. Very large bedroom and it was great to have a bathroom and a separate shower room. Kitchen tiny though which needed a really good clean. I appreciate the owners have kitted it with antiques, but I would have preferred modern cutlery to be honest. Settee was not comfortable. Our main comment is there were so many rules and regulations which were rather unnecessary. Perhaps the owners have had a bad experience regarding health and safety, but all the notices seemed excessive. We felt quite restricted, as if we were being watched all the time. Also this is the first time we've booked a holiday cottage and not had a welcome pack. Shame because it's such a lovely location, and could have been so much better. The weather was fantastic though and we really loved the area."

"We have stayed in a number of holiday accommodation lets and we were very happy with S13871. We stayed for three nights over a March weekend and found the accommodation to be very warm and comfortable. It was very clean and well-presented; the owner was very friendly, on our arrival providing free-range eggs from her chickens. We took our dog with us and in front of the cottage there is a fenced off secure area in which we could safely let him run around. For me the most important thing is a comfortable bed and the bed in S13871 is a large, extremely comfortable bed. The accommodation is in a quiet rural location in a beautiful area of East Sussex with many places of interest to visit nearby. I have no hesitation in recommending S13871 and we intend to stay there again in the not too distant future."

"A lovely location, surrounded by fields and trees. We saw deer, a heron and a large bird of prey. Peacefully quiet but only a short drive to the village of Newick where there was a shop and a really great bakery. There were three pubs, all serving food. We had an excellent Sunday lunch at The Crown. The countryside was lovely and there were lots of things to do. We mainly stuck to NT properties and gardens, and had a relaxing break.0The barn was beautifully presented. My parents found the facilities all on one level made getting about easy. Lovely kitchen a stylish dining table with delightful views. My only criticism is that the twin beds upstairs weren't all that comfortable, but to be fair they were probably intended for children. Nice bathrooms and plenty of towels."

"Just a few words. From the property description we took it there was off road parking in a drive. We always insist on this. It was not so at S13939. Parking was in a very narrow unmade road. No turning, meaning you had to back up at least 50 feet into a busy road. Where you parked was very difficult; old tree stumps, steep, dangerous slope when you got out the car. Might be room for one car, not two. Worse of all there was an obvious and long running dispute with all the neighbours over parking. Very unpleasant situation. Also when we arrived the TV did not work. Had to get an engineer to fix. Took him 40 minutes to retune the Sky box. Should have been checked prior to our arrival. Outside of property in much need of repair, inside very little character, very bland."
