"We had a lovely week at S42034 - location in Muker completely perfect. We enjoyed the cottage the many fab walks from the door and several meals at The Farmers Arms. S42034 was very well presented with yummy ample welcome basket (thank you!), logs, kindling and lots of lovely features. We were warm & snug, enjoyed the treat of reclining sofa, underfloor heating (kids appreciated lounging around on the warm floor), open kitchen layout nice and communal, lots of space for wet walking clobber and muddy boots, two toilets, great bathrooms (amazing mirrors!), heated towel rails, lovely bedrooms, and the fantastic garden birds out the back courtesy of the neighbours. We also really appreciated being completely off grid - no mobile signal, no wifi, a real bonus. Here are a few points of feedback. The dishwasher was full and needed unloading when we arrived. Plastic chopping boards are needed for food prep. The eating area is sadly quite squashed and lack of proper chairs made it uncomfortable to hang out at for 5 of us - we couldn't enjoy a relaxed game of scrabble. It was also impossible to have drinks when sitting at the sofa/chairs without side tables in reach - perhaps a folding table or two? We were pleased the two single beds could be made into a double but we expected there a double/king duvet to go with this (and 2 pillows each). There weren't enough large towels for the number of people. Mattresses were comfy but the thick duvets were just too hot and uncomfortable - we kept the heating completely off upstairs. The instructions about the fire were provided (vital) but other important info was lacking i.e. no guide about how to adjust/override the heating; we couldn't work out how to put hot water onto boost; nothing was provided about how/when/where to put bins out; no info on recycling. We used the washing machine and dryer which was great but only after we worked out that the water was off to the washing machine - we left it on. The TV was great but we should mention that the sound kept dropping out oddly on a number of occasions."

"I stayed at Kestrel Cottage with my 96 year old mother in law. I had chosen the property for its wetroom, bedrooms all on one level and it's proximity to Durham. The cottage far exceeded all my expectations. It is much bigger than the photographs suggest, bathrooms, hallways and living area are very spacious. Everything is very new, tasteful and not worn out or shabby. The beds are really comfortable and the linen is good quality. The main living room is south facing so it's light, and bright. The views from the two full length windows are stunning, open fields and countryside. We were visited every morning by two friendly goats at the fence by the patio. Most afternoons we watched parachuters descending to an area about a half a mile away. All most entertaining. We could park at the door which was very helpful as my mother in law couldn't walk too far. In the wetroom there are handles to aid the not so steady. The owner kindly brought us a proper shower seat too, which was so useful.Even though very early in the year we found a lot to do in the area. Durham is nearby, we went several times. I highly recommend the Oriental Museum, we visited the botanical garden, cathedral and castle. The Hartlepool maritime museum was excellent. We went to Gateshead quay. Just a couple of miles away we went to the big outlet shopping centre and the coastal towns and coast road are on the doorstep. All this to do, and then at the end of a busy day out the cottage was a relaxing, warm and welcoming home to come back to.Jean the owner was friendly and helpful, she lives nearby but wasn't intrusive at all. The welcome pack was extremely generous, including eggs, bread, milk. Kestrel Cottage was an excellent choice for our holiday and we were delighted with everything we found there."

"Had a great stay Feb half term Monday to Friday. The 5 of us. inc 3 yr old twins and a 7 yr old. The kids do love a bunk-bed :-) Weather was cold and snow flurries every day which added to the fun ..... we loved it. A really cozy cottage in a great spot surrounded by snow topped peaks and a proper pub with good food 30 secs from the doorstep ! local walks straight into countryside - perfect for the children. (a few initial teething problems when we arrived at around 5pm ..... underfloor heating wasn't working so very cold downstairs meaning a very early night (heating was working upstairs). Next day meant an 8 mile drive to Reeth for extra logs (for the downstairs burner) and an old-skool telephone box to report the problem and get a plumber round who arrived around tea-time. (no mobile phone signals in Muker and no wifi in the cottage). Having stayed in many cottages over the years with and without kids the property would definitely benefit from a few finishing flourishes - wifi, a Blu-ray/dvd player, some kids DVD's - oh and the wardrobes/drawers seem stacked so high with spare sheets/pillow cases etc,.... that they leave very little room for actual clothes (maybe invest in a bedding box - there is space for one). Overall we'd definitely stay again and our 9 out of 10 score could be a 10 with some tweaks by the owner."

"Please do not be put off by a lack of reviews and photo's as the cottages have only been open since June this year. We planned a family holiday renting all 3 cottages and from the moment we spoke to the owner Jean to arrange arrival details we knew we had chosen the right place to stay, she was so lovely and friendly. When we arrived we were given the warmest welcome by Jean and her daughter Amy. The cottages are amazing with fields all around which are home to goats, lama's and cows. Each cottage is furnished to a very high standard and much more spacious than they appear on the photo's which do not do them justice. They are very well equiped and spotlessly clean. If you do feel anything is missing Jean is only a phone call away and only too happy to help. The welcome packs are amazing with fresh bread, scones, every flavour of jam you could ever want and a lovely bottle of prosecco. We will definately be back as there is so much to see in the area and could not have found anywhere better to stay. Thank you so much Jean for making our break so pleasurable. Your hospitality was second to none. We really do feel like we have made a new friend. We have been already, and will stay in touch."

"The cottage was set in a perfect location. There are 3 cottages in total. The scenery was lovely. The cottage was excellent and had everything we needed. The welcome package that the owner had left us was brilliant. It contained milk, eggs, muffins, bread, butter, jams, breakfast cereals, cakes and orange juice. The kitchen was also stocked with tea and coffee. All toiletries you could think of were available including toothbrushes and toothpaste, razors with cotton buds and pads and tissues in the bedrooms and bathroom. The location is remote but there are places within a short drive to restock. The weather during our visit was snowy and made the scenery even more fantastic. Can be a bit difficult driving but the owner did grit the roads for us and advised us of the best route for our journey. We can highly recommend the Knitsley Farm Shop which is only 5 minutes drive and there is The Old Mill restaurant about 3 minutes drive which was recommended by other visitors but we didn't go there. We would definitely recommend these cottages and will be returning again soon."
