"The village of Longnor is lovely and a good location for a holiday in the Peak District. In terms of the cottage itself, this would be a much nicer holiday cottage than it is if it was maintained better and brought up to date. It smells damp, especially in the kitchen, and we found slug trails across the rug in the lounge. The kitchen itself is very difficult to prepare meals in; there is very little worktop space, it is extremely dark (light required to be on at all times) and there are no cupboards - all the equipment is stored on open shelving, some of which is located behind the oven and is not easily or safely accessible, especially when the oven is on. The oven itself is extremely old; the door is broken and the temperature dials have fallen off. It needs replacing as it is not safe cooking meals when trying to guess at the correct temperature. Washing up is difficult as there is no draining board - the draining rack is in the sink so if you tip the dirty water away before you have dried up, it will go all over the clean items. We could not get the heating to work as the controls were not accessible due to broken covers on all but one of the heaters, so we found the cottage very cold. The portable radiator upstairs was broken. The bed linen was old and stained, and had some sort of limescale-like dirt all over it. Overall, we could not recommend this as a good cottage to choose if you want a relaxing holiday. We were surprised and disappointed in view of the previous positive reviews."

"Smithy Cottage was quaint and compact nestled in the Derbyshire countryside. It had adequate facilities (oven, toaster, washing machine) for a family and the bedrooms were of a good size. The lounge is quite compact and has a small TV with freeview channels available and a DVD player. There is central heating throughout which really does get quite toasty and facilities to have an open/log fire in the lounge. We did find the house smelt a bit smokey but this was more of a log fire smoke rather than cigarette smoke so is to be expected in a property of this type with an open fire and chimney. It was useful having the wifi connection although it was a bit patchy and sporadic. The cottage was clean although there was a small amount of mould around window sills/frames which could do with treating although it wasn't a huge amount I did feel it affected my overall opinion of the property. The cottage is well located, close to Ashbourne with lots of wonderful things to do around the area. We found it made a good base for all the activities we planned over the weekend and our two children (aged 5 and 2.5 years) both loved it. We probably would stay here again if we visited the area in the future."

"Just returned from our christmas break at gunside farm, what can i say the cottage was fantastic it was just great for christmas, it was very spacious cosy lovelly and warm just wished we used the log burner more as it was so warm we did not need it. It was well equiped only thing we missed was some kitchen utensils but we made do. The intetnet was up and down depending on where you were in the cottage but was a bonus as not advertised with wi fi. The owners were very accomadating even puting a second telly in so the kids could play there games and very friendly. Loved feeding the chickens kids did to, we did not go out much as wanted relaxing break but is a great location for exploring the area and not to far from the town with fantastic views. Would highly recomend thank you to the owners it lived up to our expectations and more. The white and Bouher family"

"Really lovely place to stay.. Fell in love with the cottage as soon as we walked through the door. Lovely cozy open fire which I loved, fully equipped kitchen with a chocolate cake and some milk waiting for us on arrival which was very kind and very much appreciated. Comfy bed too, and a nice electric shower which was good. Only downside was the musty damp smell when we walked in, but that didn't put us off. The pub next door wasn't as we expected though.. very rude people, no atmosphere, and just very odd. We had one drink and left. We did eat in a few of the surrounding pubs nearby which were much better & had some lovely food. Overall, it was a great place to relax, watch a movie in front of the fire & enjoy. I would definitely visit again & recommend :)"

"A warm and comfortable base for exploring the surrounding countryside and even as far afield as The Imperial War Museum North in Trafford. We were not actually in the cottage for any lengthy periods of time but an evening or two with a lovely log fire was very welcome. Also welcome was the pack of home-made scones, jam and clotted cream - as we were from Cornwall the clotted cream was somewhat "coals to Newcastle", but none the less enjoyable for that. With having a pub next door we had expected it to be a little noisier, but in actual fact it was very quiet. All in all we would recommend Smithy Cottage.* It was a welcome break for us to be without it, but if a mobile signal is essential then note that there's none here - although the wifi worked well."
