When the heatwave kicks in and you don’t fancy sunbathing in the shadow of a skyscraper, it might be time to grab your picnic blanket and your sunscreen, and head out of London to spend your summer weekends at a nearby beach. Sound like a plan? Here are three super coastal destinations, all within 3 hours drive of the capital!
Swanage is a 3 hour drive away from LDN, give or take depending on traffic, and is definitely worth a visit if you like long walks and sand between your toes. This beach town is great for laying out when it’s hot and keeping the kids entertained with arcade games if the clouds drift over. Swap your flip flops for comfortable shoes and hike up to Old Harry Rocks to see the stunning Dorset clifftops, and make sure you’re back at the beach for an infamous Harlees Fish & Chips takeaway before you head home!
Not quite as well known as other nearby beaches, Hayling Island sits just to the right of Portsmouth, and is another pebble beach gem along the southern coastline that you won’t want to miss during the summer months. Just over 2 hours outside of London, this adorable seafront, lined with colourful beach huts, really is a great day out, made even better by a family trip Funland amusement park, located just behind the beach!
Brighton beach is one of the most famous in the country (maybe the world?), and only 2 hours outside of London. Every year, hordes of city dwellers flock to this beautiful seaside town, where endless vintage boutiques and quirky shops await. Go for the whole weekend to really make the most of all there is to see and do – including trips to the beautiful Royal Pavilion, the fun-filled Brighton Wheel, or the daring i360 viewing point. Take a stroll out onto the iconic Brighton Palace Pier and treat yourself to an good old fashioned ice cream while enjoying this must-see destination.
