All across the UK there are amazing, family-friendly events happening this half term. After several long weeks of school, this holiday offers a chance to recharge and spend some quality time together as a family. We have chosen three of the most popular half term destinations and found some of the best half term activities on offer. Whether you’re lucky enough to live in one of them, or you’re planning an October half term holiday, there is an event waiting for you and your family.
- Illuminating York 2016
This Festival attracts more than 50,000 people to the city to experience York in a new light using cutting-edge technology to create spectacular sites of illuminating artworks. It will be taking place in various locations around York City from 26th – 29th October; so you can experience this beautiful city from a whole new perspective.
- Pumpkin Festival
This year at Cannon Hall Farm visitors will find almost 10,000 pumpkins waiting to be picked and carved into spook-tacular creations. It’s an excellent day out for all ages, and if you are a pumpkin carving novice, there will be expert carvers available to lend a helping hand. Taking place from 21st – 31st October, the Pumpkin Festival offers a fun-filled day out, with plenty of other activities to enjoy while you’re there.
- October half term at Beningbrough Hall & Gardens
A stone’s throw from the city of York, this wonderful National Trust property sure does pull out the stops for half term. This year the theme is owls. It’s a chance for little ones to learn more about these majestic birds and there will be an ‘oh wise owl’ art trail, as well as stories and crafts. Taking place from the 21st October – 5th November there will be plenty to enjoy here.
- Woodland Pumpkin Trail at Allan Bank Woodland
One with a Halloween twist, this Trail will have all of the family keeping their eyes for Pumpkins hidden around the woodland. Find six or more and you could win a prize. It takes place from 21st October – 5th November and booking isn’t needed, so it’s ideal for a spontaneous day out with the family.
- Wild Art Week at Whitehaven Coast
Wild Art Week will let your children’s creative side run wild while indulging in a good helping of fresh air at the same time. Head down to the coast any day of the week from 23rd – 27th October, dogs on leads are welcome too. With chalk and easels on offer, this is a great event for all ages.
- Beach Clean at South Walney Nature Reserve
The South Walney Nature Reserve’s beach clean falls in half term (15th October) and offers a chance to keep the kids busy while doing good for the local area at the same time. A day in the fresh sea air is invigorating and the whole family is sure to sleep well afterwards.
- Norwich Science Festival
From 21st – 29th October, head over to Norwich for nine science-filled days of fun. There will be shows, activities and more, suitable for all ages. So whether your little one is already an aspiring scientist or they are a reluctant learner, there will be something for you here.
- Halloween at Holkham
Add a spooky spin this half term with Halloween themed fun at Holkham. Visit from 26th – 29th October for family friendly activities including decorating treats, pumpkin carving, a quiz, trails to follow and storytellers. Don’t forget to come in fancy dress so you can join the parade.
- James and the Giant Peach at the Garage
For three days only, from 18th – 20th October James and the Giant Peach is being performed at The Garage Norwich. This lovely venue is a great place for a family evening out. Shows start at 7.30pm for this much-loved family classic.
