That’s why we’ve rounded up the UK’s most stunning destinations and picked out their most awesome events, all for your short break pleasure. In every part of the country, counties and towns boast their own calendar of one-off adventures, but we’ve noticed there’s an especially great selection this August in the Lake District.

Summer Buffet Cruises On Lake Windermere
How to make a cruise across Lake Windermere even more special? Throw in a two course buffet and licensed bar, of course! Lucky for us, every Saturday until the 26th of August and every Wednesday until the 30th August, Windermere Lake Cruises are putting on a magical evening for its passengers. With delectable food on offer, live music from the resident band and an open dance floor – it’s a guaranteed fun night on England’s largest lake. The popular cruise takes around two and half hours as it travels the entire length of Lake Windermere. Don’t just stand on the banks looking in, book yourself on one of these delightful cruises and experience the lake in a way you never have before.
Cartmel County Show
Hosted by the esteemed Cartmel Agricultural Society for more than 130 years, the Cartmel Country Show brings some much-loved traditional flair to South Lakes on the first Wednesday in August each year. So this year, on Wednesday 2nd August, you can expect plenty of family entertainment, livestock, birds of prey, hundreds of trade stands, classes, crafts and much, much more. Set in the picturesque and well-known Cartmel Racecourse, you can enjoy marquee upon marquee of country classic entertainment as well as live music to get everyone in the Lakeland spirit. Total Warrior
Battle of the fittest and by far the muddiest of our August events, Total Warrior is the gathering of 2,500 individuals to participate in an extreme obstacle race designed by ex-military personnel. The ultimate test of strength and stamina, Total Warrior comes to the Lake District on August 5th and 6th to put Lakelanders through their paces. There’s also a casual 10 tonnes of ice, 10 tonnes of mud and such delightful obstacles as the ‘Human BBQ’, the ‘Peaks of Pain’ and the ‘Ball Breakers’.
The Lowther Show
Welcoming the local community to a superb showcase of rural living, the Lowther Show will be taking place in the beautiful grounds of Lowther Castle across the 12th and 13th of August. Combining world-class sporting championships with over 250 quality exhibition stands, picnic areas, crafts and antiques fairs. Dogs are welcome on leads (hurray!) and even a hound show! But did you know, the Lowther Show is the home of several amazing mini-festivals? The Clay Shooting Festival is an ever popular event, not to mention the Food and Beer festival. Enjoy live music to round out the weekend and don’t be afraid to get those wellies muddy!
Picnic Cinema at Muncaster Castle
On the 11th and 12thof August, a unique outdoor cinema experience hits the spooky and much adored Muncaster Castle! The Picnic Cinema at Muncaster Castle is a two night event showcasing two classic films – first night Quentin Tarintino’s Pulp Fiction, second night the cult classic Boogie Nights. The evening starts at 7pm and the films are shown at around 9pm in the atmospheric darkness of the castle, and regardless of the weather, the show still goes on! Although it’s advertised as a bring your picnic event, there is food to be purchased on-site at the Castle cafe if needs be. Overnight camping also available!
