This ex-mining town made a name for itself through the slate it produced and it has been said that this was ‘the town that roofed the world’. Remnants of this past are still evident across the town; from two, still functioning, mines to the Llechwedd Slate Caverns where you can see what life of a quarryman is like. There are plenty of paths allowing you to explore the area by foot, and of course, there are plenty of activities on offer in Snowdonia.

"A new rental, and was more nicely done out than we expected from the pictures, and the owner and the cleaner (3 doors down) are obviously doing loads to make sure the cottage in right for guests. We found everything we needed, and there were some lovely treats to welcome us. Not sure we’d stay again with the dog... We’ve never had a problem with him before in a cottage yet there was something about the gate at the bottom of the stairs... or seeing us disappearing behind it... and so for at least 3 of the 7 nights he woke up and stood at it barking at all hours. Thank goodness for thick slate walls... Also the garden at the back is up steep steps which proved a bit tricky for him as he’s getting on a bit. However there is a small front garden and the porch area was fabulous for cleaning wet paws and storing muddy boots. The cottage is up a steep but short hill from the main street in Blaenau-Ffestiniog. It was suggested we could park further down the hill if we weren’t confident getting up there but we were fine - and with a bit of care avoided scraping the car on any of the slate walls or parked cars! The neighbouring house looks a bit off-putting due to some graffiti but we didn’t have any problems.Blaenau-Ffestiniog is a good location to be based on for visiting the area. We enjoyed the railway and slate caverns in the village, and travelled to the fantastic beach at Black Rock Sands and to do the zip wire. It’s a mining town so not the prettiest or most touristy, so if we’d wanted to eat out every night we might have been better in Porthmadog or Betws-y-coed. However having had lunches out we were happy to self cater and there is a handy and very well-stocked Co-op on the high street which has everything we could need. Doesn't get a row of 10's as it's just not as well appointed as other cottages we've stayed at, but it’s absolutely fine as a base for exploring beautiful Snowdonia."

"we stayed here for our honeymoon! we set off late afternoon so as we were driving into wales it was pitch black! little did we know what we were driving through! we moved in by torch light and un packed! we decided we would order a pizza haha little chance of that as all the takeaways shut at 9.30pm so had to settle for champagne that the owners had left us, when we woke up the next morning i stuck my head out the sky window and nearly fell off the bed! the views were absolutly amazing!!! mountains and fantastic scenery everywhere i looked. there is no where on this earth i would have rather woke up that morning. there is also a little train that runs past the cottage just 6 foot away from the door that toots its horn when it passes, it was like something you only read about in books! over the week we went down the slate mines, climbed snowdon, went to bangor, went to llandudno, climbed another mountain, this was my favourite, every corner we walked around gave us another fantastic view and there were ruins everywhere, old slate cottages still stand as though the people had just upped and left everything as it was, fireplaces still in tact etc, we couldnt believe what we were seeing, we will never forget our honeymoon and i would recomend this cottage without a doubt"

"Two adults stayed for a week with our eleven and nine year old children plus the family dog - everybody had a fantastic week. The cottage was very comfortable, clean and well equipped with everything we needed for a great holiday. Permanent car parking was not available at the cottage (access only) but parking close by on the street presented no problems whatsoever. The cottage is a great base to explore the local hills and we found the abandoned slate mines fascinating. There are loads of small paths and by-ways which it was fun to explore. There are plenty of shops and eateries only a few minutes drive (or train ride!) away in Blaenau Ffestiniog. There is a pub approx 10 mins walk and a great cafe close to the power station, again a ten minute walk. This is also a great location for looking around North Wales - Harlech Castle only half an hour's car ride, we also had a day out on the train to Portmadog and passed within an arm's length of the cottage."

"It's one of a kind, you really do feel like you're staying somewhere special. Loved the fact that there were 3 bathrooms, that it was clean and when we had a chill night there was Netflix! Not to mention it was close to a lot of places we wanted to explore 30-40mins drive. However if you're going with 4+ adults, someone is gunna have to take the room with the children's bunk bed. We also found that the light doesn't work in that same room and also we tried to find the iron and hairdryer but it we weren't sure where they were. A lot of little things were missing like dishwasher tablets and washing powder but there is literally a small shop just a minute away to grab the essentials. Which we left there for the next group to use.All in all we really loved our stay, it was big enough that we felt like we had our own space. Thank you for having us!"

"The cottage was exactly as sold; it was very clean and comfortable, the kitchen was very well equipped, the word-burner worked beautifully, and having a dishwasher was a definite bonus for holiday relaxation. The property is literally built into the hillside and the external steps are numerous and steep; there are two roads to access the property, one is very steep and the other exceptionally steep. Blaenau is a convenient base for access to the Ffestiniog railway, the mountains of Snowdonia, the Llyn coastline, and even Caernarfon was not too arduous to get to. We stayed with two young children who loved the cottage, and happy children means happy parents :)"
