"Lovely cottage let down by the kitchen. The bedrooms, living room and dining room were all lovely with some nice quirky features. However, it seemed as if the owners hadn't got round to updating the kitchen yet. We stayed over Christmas and although the weather was quite mild the kitchen was freezing - even with both ovens going. There is a radiator but it's round a corner by the back door and had no effect on the kitchen at all. For a property marketed to sleep 8-10 people the stock of kitchenware and utensils was inadequate: not enough wine glasses for 6 people; no highballs etc, just a few mismatched tumblers. No oven gloves!(had to buy our own) Only 2 tea towels provided for a 4 night stay (had to buy extra). Plenty of knives, forks and spoons but not a lot else. Tin opener useless (had to buy our own). The cleanliness of the kitchen was also not great (the rest of the property was fine) - cutlery, plates and pans had obviously just been taken out of the dishwasher and put away without being checked and most were dirty. Such a shame that a lovely property was let down by poor basic standards and hopefully it was just down to the owners being new to holiday letting. One final thing - it needs to be highlighted in the cottage description that there is a steep set of stairs between the kitchen and the dining room (just so people are prepared to have to carry their Christmas dinner from one floor to the next). We would happily stay again (despite the kitchen gripes) as the location is great - nice local pubs, walks and a well stocked co-op round the corner."

"This was our second visit to S23794. We love it for its peace and quiet, particularly in the evening when wandering around the lake hearing nothing but bird song is a delight. If you want that, you accept that the shops are a mile or so away but the proximity of the cafe means one can always get breakfast! There are some downsides. The property is managed from the Douglas estate office in Lanarkshire. The local cleaner is excellent and the state of the property cannot be faulted but perhaps it is not her job to check on equipment. On this occasion we could not find paring or other kitchen knives, an irritant but not insuperable. The main problem is still the bathroom. I agree that the previous wetroom always smelt dank and it was difficult to reach the toilet without walking through the wet floor, once someone had showered. My husbsnd joins those who have complained about the lack of a shaving mirror. I found the aperture to the toilet in the alcove too narrow, squeezing between the basin and the heated towel rail. Perhaps a smaller shower to create more room for the basin would have been better and the shower itself had no grab rail and was slippery but these irritants did not detract from our trip and we look forward to returning."

"We went too early! The weather was very poor for the time of year (not the fault of S23794!) but there was little open although there are many interesting places about. We had booked the place as we needed a home-from-home near to our daughter's house in Galashiels, and managed to get done what we had planned. The unseasonably cold weather meant that the place took a while to warm up (obviously not been used the week before) - thick stone walls are very forgiving once warm but very chilling until then.Furnishings etc were fine, but - please!- try to imagine you are living in the place. One small lamp (with a very low output bulb) plus an overhead lamp (again with a low output lamp) is NOT enough for a living room - no light at the dining table! Lighting in the kitchen area was also poor and could be a safety hazard - we replaced and cleaned most of the ceiling lamps. No mirror in the bathroom!! No hair dryer (men don't notice but women do!)Overall a good effort but let down by little details."

"Belford is a lovely friendly village. The Black Swan Hotel was especially welcoming. We had all the amenities of the village but were close enough to the beach and countryside too. The house was spacious and quirky and the beds we're comfortable. The layout was difficult with a flight of stairs between the kitchen and dining room and some twin rooms rather than double beds would be better for families. Our teenage girls did not appreciate sharing a bed and the sofa bed was very uncomfortable. The back yard was not well cared for and there was no pleasant outdoor space. The worst aspect of the cottage was the noise of the plumbing. From the downstairs bedroom there was constant loud noise of flushing toilets and gushing water, including through the night. The first time we went to use the oven we found leftover pizza on the grill pan . The oven was not clean overall and complicated to use. We would love to return to Belford but unfortunately not in this cottage."

"After looking for somewhere to stay whilst working away, and spending lots of time in hotels. I noticed S14501 whilst searching and was surprised to see the price was around the same as hotels near by. Being Vegan I always struggle to find hotels that can provide me with food I can eat, so being able to cook my own food was a massive plus. The kitchen was well equipped for cooked although some of the utensils needed cleaning before use. The cottage was very spacious and the bedrooms and bathroom very clean. The living space could have been cleaner as lots of crumbs and old food on the carpets and under the sofas. Very close to a local Asda and other shops, so nipping out to pick up anything was easy. Overall I had a very good experience at S14501. The minor cleanliness issue twinned with the heating not being on for my arrival which left the house very cold for the first night, are the only issues I have. I would definitely stay here again."
