The ancient village of Donisthorpe lies on the Derbyshire/Leicestershire border and just a short drive from the picturesque Derbyshire Dales. This former mining village has a thriving village pub, one of the oldest buildings in the village, a Post Office and shop and is ideally located in the heart of the National Forest close to many chocolate box villages and interesting towns. Nearby Burton upon Trent is a town straddling the River Trent, made famous by its breweries, and home of many award-winning ales. Alabaster carving, cloth working and manning the cotton mills are all central to the town’s history. The small market town of Market Bosworth is just a short drive away, home to the Battle of Bosworth, with an excellent visitor centre at the battlefield site. It has many amenities, including small independent shops, pubs and a renowned fish and chip shop, all located around the market square. There are many historic sites and places of interest such as Tutbury Castle, the Old Marina, the Bass Brewery Centre and the Claymills Pumping Station. A good touring base with Twycross Zoo, Drayton Manor, Alton Towers, Belper, Matlock and Ashbourne within an easy reach, as well as Calke Abbey and the cathedral city of Lichfield.

It was everything we needed to enjoy our 10th wedding anniversary. Maple lodge was as advertised. Clean and well maintained. Although there had been rain recently we enjoyed walking with our dog around the lake. We went to the Cricketts Inn for lunch half way through our stay. A dog friendly pub run by some very nice people and the food was great. Even catered for vegans like myself. They kindly gave my dog some treats and a bowl of water. We spent a day at Calke Abbey between the odd shower. We walked for miles. The hot tub was a must to relax our aching bones after that. So happy to have found this gem. We will be back again in the not too distant future.

Well equipped but crockery a bit limited, in particular no large bowls (salad bowls, mixing bowls). No info about recycling provided and apparently no recycling bins (we took our recycling home with us, which was no problem).
